NASHVILLE, Tenn. The Campbell softball team (24-10, 9-3
Atlantic Sun) swept a conference doubleheader from Belmont (9-17,
1-5 Atlantic Sun) on Friday at Aquinas Field. The Camels won the
first game 8-4 and took the second one 10-3
The Bruins scored two in the first inning. Dawn Thoni led off with
a single. Back-to-back fielder's choices moved her to third. Thoni
then came in on wild pitch. A single from Brooke Babington scored
Sammi Parks for the second run.
Amanda Miller cut the deficit in half with her blast to left field
to lead off the second inning. The home run was Miller's fifth of
the season.
Brittany Stanley tied the game in the third inning with her two-out
RBI double scoring Taylor McGee from first base. Miller followed
with a double to score pinch runner Lizzie Goldbach from second
with the third run. Another double followed with Keeli Michael
dumping one into center to score Goldbach with the fourth run.
CU
added three more runs in the fourth. Hilary Wheatley singled to
lead off the frame and got all the way to third on the fielding
error from the Bruins centerfielder. Wheatley came in to score on
Robin Leathers' fielder's choice in which she also reached. Katie
Hinton then singled and after two were retired Stanley came through
with the biggest hit of the frame, a double to the gap to score
Hinton and Leathers with the sixth and seventh runs.
The Bruins struck back with a run in the fourth on Amanda Buntin's
RBI single.
The Camels got the run back in the fifth inning on McGee's RBI
infield single.
CU
finished the scoring on Leathers' two-run home run in the top of
the seventh. The home run was Leathers 11th of the
season.
Lauren Stephan (7-3) went the first six innings with three runs
allowed for the win. Katie Woodcock was brought in to finish the
game and pitched a scoreless seventh inning with two
strikeouts.
Stanley ended the doubleheader with three doubles and five RBIs.
Hinton scored four runs over the two games. Miller also played well
three RBIs and a home run.
Game One (Campbell 8
& Belmont 4)
The
Camels scored first with a run in the first inning. Hinton doubled
to left, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Karlie Love's
RBI ground out.
After
Hinton reached on a fielder's choice in the third inning, Love
again drove her in with a home run to right center field to
increase the lead to three. The home run was Love's 12th
of the season.
CU
added two runs to its lead in the sixth inning. Stanley reached on
a walk. Brittani Hubbard was then inserted to run and came in to
score on Miller's triple. Miller scored on a pass ball on the next
offering to make the score 5-0.
The
Camels added three more runs to the lead in the seventh. Goldbach,
Leathers and Hinton all walked to load the bases. Goldbach then
scampered home on a pass ball. Love walked to load the bases again.
Stanley hit a two-run single down the left field line to plate
Leathers and Hinton and increase the margin to 8-0.
The
Bruins made it a closer game and ruined the shutout in the bottom
of the seventh on Babington's RBI double. Sara Bentley then
followed with a three-run home run to make the final score
8-4.
Stanley
(8-3)
earned the win for Campbell throwing the first six and a third with
four strikeouts. The loss went to Hannah Brenzie (0-2), who allowed
five runs in her 5.2 innings pitched.
The
Camels will finish up the busy week with a trip across town to
Lipscomb on Saturday, April 3 starting at 3 p.m. est.
