ST. LOUIS
- In the Pioneer Football League's Preseason Coaches Poll,
announced this afternoon, Campbell's football program was predicted
to finish 10th in the conference.
The
Camels (1-10, 0-8 PFL) returns two All-PFL performers this season
in Milton Brown and Brandon
Chandler.
Brown was
a first-team All-PFL selection after ranking sixth in the
conference in tackles (85) and tackles per game (7.7). He also
placed ninth in the league in interceptions with three, including
two returns for touchdowns. The Havelock, N.C. native reached
double figures in tackles three times, including a career-best of
13 against league-rival Dayton on October 4, 2008.
Chandler
had a noteworthy true freshman campaign to earn Honorable Mention
All-PFL status. The rising sophomore placed fourth on the team and
12th among all defensive back in the league with 54
tackles in 2008. He also tallied two interceptions (tied for third
on the team) and three pass breakups (tied for second on the team).
The Kernersville, N.C. native also served the dual role as a kick
returner for Campbell and led the team with 436 all-purpose yards
and a team-high 393 yards as a return specialist.
San
Diego, who have won or shared the PFL title in three of the last
four seasons and posted a 19-3 league record in that span, were
picked to win the regular season championship with a total of 77
points and five first-place votes.
In a very
close race Dayton and Jacksonville tied for second in the voting
with 71 points each. Jacksonville captured the league's title in
2008 and earned a place in the Gridiron Classic. Rounding up the
rest of the poll Morehead State placed fourth (51), Butler ranked
fifth (42), Drake sixth (40), Davidson seventh (37), Marist eighth
(32) and Valparaiso ninth (20).
The poll
consisted of voting among the 10 member school coaches in the
league with no coach allowed to vote for their own team.
With the
addition of Marist to the league slate for 2009 a few scheduling
changes have been made. Each team retains an eight-game league
schedule with each squad not playing one of the league members on a
two-year rotational basis. This season the school that Campbell
will not play is San Diego. The Camels open the 2009 conference
slate on September 19 with a 6 p.m. game at Davidson. For the third
straight season, the league champion will be determined by
regular-season play and the champion will meet the Northeast
Conference Champion in the fourth Gridiron Classic, December 5.
Campbell
continues fall camp this afternoon with a 6 p.m. session in
preparation for the opening day against Methodist at 1 p.m. on
September 5.
