BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell golf coach John Crooks has announced
the addition of four incoming freshmen for the upcoming 2009-10
season.
The signees include Harrison Ashworth (Fuquay-
Varina, N.C.), Daniel Barrett (Cape Town, South
Africa), Sean Goatley-Soan (Cape Town, South
Africa), and Paul Howell (Wilson, N.C.)
"This was a huge year to bring in four players and we feel like in
athletics you always look for bigger, stronger, and faster athletes
and we feel like each of these young men brings that to the table.
All four are excellent students as well and they should certainly
be able to make their mark here at Campbell," said coach John
Crooks.
Ashworth comes to Campbell from Fuquay-Varina High School after a
stellar high school career where he was named to the all-conference
team all four years. Ashworth finished with a 35.2 (Nine Hole)
senior year scoring average. He also finished third in the 4A
state championship his senior year. Several publications regarded
him as one of the top ten juniors in the state.
Barrett was a member of the National Junior under-18 team and the
Western Province under-23 team. Barrett also finished fourth in
the South African under-21 event with a ten under par total. He
brings a wealth of tournament experience with him as he has
competed at some of the highest levels in his country.
Goatley-Soan also represented the Western Province of South Africa
as he was the captain of both the under-16 and under-18 teams. He
has been ranked as high as 20th (under-18) in South
Africa.
A graduate of Hunt High School, Howell finished with a 71.4 stroke
average for his career. He was named 2008 and 2009 Player of the
Year in the Eastern Carolina Conference. Howell also won the 2009
Keith Hills Junior Amateur. In addition to his golf
accomplishments, Howell also played some football and baseball
during his time at Hunt.
The Camels return six letterwinners from last season's conference
championship team, including all-conference and all-freshman
performer Vaita Guillaume. The team begins their fall schedule
September 11, when they travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the
Tucker Intercollegiate.
