BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Florida Gulf Coast notched 11 service aces,
including three from senior setter Chandra Lefever, to down
Campbell, 3-0 (18-25, 24-26, 19-25), in Atlantic Sun volleyball
action Friday inside the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.
Campbell falls to 5-4 overall on the season, with a 0-1 A-Sun mark,
while the Eagles move to 3-5 and 2-0 in conference play.
Lefever added 32 assists, 11 digs and three kills on the night to
pace FGCU, while outside hitter duo Jelena Simic and Anna Wagner
posted a game-high 10 kills each. Simic added 12 digs and a pair of
aces in the contest, while Wagner recorded four digs and four
assists.
Senior middle blocker Ashley Yance, meanwhile, collected a .429
hitting percentage on the night with eight kills on 14 attempts
with only two errors. The Ft. Myers, Fla. native added three digs,
two blocks and a pair of aces in the win. Junior middle Jacqueline
Cowden also recorded seven kills and two blocks for FGCU.
Senior middle blocker Ashley Weers and junior
outside hitter Emily Werner paced the
Camels, combining for 20.5 points in the loss. Weers, a native of
Littleton, Colo., ended the night with seven total blocks (five
assisted, two solo), a season high, adding six kills with a .357
hitting percentage. The senior's five blocks moves her past both
Tabitha Turner (172, 2003-06) and Femi Alabi (173, 2005-07) on
the Camels' all-time block assists list, now standing at 177. Weers
also moved past Robin Marshall (214, 1991-94) on the Campbell
all-time blocks list. With 220 career blocks, Weers now stands
ninth all-time.
Werner posted a team-high nine kills with eight digs and an ace.
Junior right side hitter Caroline Hammersley added six
kills on 12 attempts with one miscue for a season-high .417 attack
percentage. The Raleigh native also notched four blocks assists and
four digs. Hope Leatigaga and Paige
Tortorello split setting duties, collecting a combined 21.
Leatigaga and redshirt senior Sarah Hill each collected
nine digs.
The Camels will be back in action tomorrow, hosting Stetson at 5
p.m. inside the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.
