SPARTANBURG, S.C.-Three Camels ended the night with double-digit
kills as Campbell raced past USC Upstate, 3-1 (21-25, 25-13, 25-23,
25-23) in Atlantic Sun volleyball action Friday night inside the
Hodge Center.
The Camels move to 9-5 on the year with a 4-1 A-Sun mark, while USC
Upstate falls to 3-12 and 0-7 in league play with its
10th consecutive loss. Campbell is now 3-2 all-time
against the Spartans, grabbing its first win in Spartanburg after
falling in its previous two tries.
Continuing on its A-Sun streak, CU is off to its best conference
start since 2000, when CU went 5-1 to begin league play. The last
time Campbell won four straight conference matches was 2001, when
the Camels took five in a row, including four regular season
matches and one A-Sun Tournament win. The streak was part of a 6-0
run from Nov. 2-16 of that year.
The Camels have also reached nine wins the fastest since 1998.
Campbell reached the mark with 14 tries this season, while grabbing
victories in 11 games in '98, when the squad finished 25-7 and 8-1
in A-Sun play.
Junior outside hitter Emily Werner fueled the
Camels with 12 kills on 27 attempts against the Spartans without an
error for a .444 attack rate. The errorless night was Werner's
fourth of her career and third of the season, accomplishing the
feat first against Davidson in the North Carolina State Classic
(5-0-15), then against Stetson at home (6-0-12). Werner tallied a
career-high kill mark without an error a year ago, when the
Sarasota, Fla. native posted a 16-0-35 line for a .457 clip against
Stetson at home. The junior also earned a double-double for the
fourth time this year and the 16th time of her career
with 12 digs against USC Upstate.
Also with double-figure kills was junior right side hitter Caroline
Hammersley, who recorded 11 scores on 23 attempts with only one
error for a season-best .435 hitting percentage. Hammersley also
added season bests with nine digs and four blocks. Junior outside
hitter Allyson Goldbach matched
with 11 kills as well, hitting the mark on 31 attempts. Goldbach
added 10 digs and a pair of aces, registering the third
double-double of her Campbell career.
Senior middle blocker Ashley Weers ended the night
with nine kills and five blocks, including three assisted and two
solo, the Littleton, Colo. native's ninth multi-block match of the
season. Junior middle Caitlin Bendy led the Camels
with six blocks, tallying five assisted and one solo. Bendy added
six kills in the win. Junior setter Paige Tortorello, meanwhile,
recorded 29 assists with five digs. Sophomore defensive specialist
Lauren Garza collected 15
digs.
The Camels' 54 kills, 151 attempts, 50 assists and 65 digs were all
four-set highs for Campbell this season. With 11.0 total team
blocks, Campbell has registered double-digit blocks for the third
consecutive match, and the sixth time this year.
Junior outside hitter Erin Jacobsen led the Spartans with 13 kills
and three blocks. Freshman outside hitter Paige Weiland posted 12
kills while sophomore middle Morgan Thomas added 10 scores. Weiland
recorded 11 digs for USC Upstate, while junior libero Megan Healey
paced the Spartans defensively at 16 digs. Rookie setter Emily
Sanders added a double-double in the loss, recording 28 assists and
14 digs.
The Camels began the match with three straight points, including
two kills from Weers. The Spartans would battle back, however,
taking their first lead at 15-14, on the way to a 25-21 win.
Goldbach hammered five kills in the set, while Weers posted four
scores for the Camels. Tortorello also notched 12 assists in the
opening frame. Jacobsen led the Spartans with five kills with
Sanders tallying seven assists and seven digs.
After USC Upstate took a 4-2 lead in the second set, the Camels
stormed back, taking an 8-5 lead into a Spartan timeout. Campbell
continued its run after the stoppage, wrapping a 9-0 streak around
the break to lead 12-5. Leading by as many as, 13, the Camels
pulled the contest even with a 25-13 score. Werner tagged four
kills in the set, while Weers added three scores and three blocks.
Sophomore setter Hope Leatigaga posted eight
assists and one block to help force the knot.
After trailing 6-5 in the third frame, Campbell managed another
run, posting a 10-2 assault that included three kills from
Hammersley to give CU a 15-8 advantage. Though the Spartans would
threaten late in the set, bringing the game to a 23-all tie, a pair
of Hammersley kills shut the door for the Camels with a 25-23 win.
The Camels hit .342 in the third frame, clocking 17 kills, while
the Spartans managed only a .200 rate. Hammersley ended the stanza
with eight kills and one block, while Tortorello tallied 14
assists. Jacobsen led the USC Upstate attack in the set with five
kills and two blocks.
In the fourth frame, the Camels and the Spartans were again locked
in a tight battle, forcing nine ties in the final set. Campbell
finally ended the contest after locking up for the last time, at
23-all, as Bendy and Hammersley blocked a Spartan attack, and
Goldbach followed with a kill to give the Camels a 25-23 win.
The Camels will travel to Johnson City, Tenn. tomorrow, taking on
East Tennessee State at 3 p.m.
