CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.-Despite nine kills apiece from Ashley
Weers, Allyson Goldbach and Emily
Werner, Campbell volleyball fell to Virginia, 3-0 (24-26,
18-25, 17-25), in the final contest of the Holliday Jefferson Cup
Saturday afternoon inside Memorial Gymnasium.
The Cavaliers move to 4-2 on the season, while CU drops to a 5-3
mark. With the loss, the Camels finish 2009 with a 1-1 record
against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents, grabbing a victory
last weekend at North Carolina State. Campbell is now 0-2 all-time
against the Cavaliers.
On top of junior outside hitter duo Emily Werner and Allyson
Goldbach's nine kills, the pair added a combined 18 digs, while
Werner posted two block assists and an ace. Ashley Weers, a senior
middle blocker, hit .467 (9-2-15) on the day, notching two block
assists and a single dig. With her two block assists, Weers moves
into a tie with former all-conference Camel Tabitha Turner
(2003-06) for seventh all-time with 172.
Junior right side hitter Caroline Hammersley added
five kills and a block assist in the loss. Junior Paige
Tortorello and sophomore Hope Leatigaga combined for
34 of the Camels' 38 assists, splitting the ticks 19 and 15,
respectively. Sophomore libero Lauren Garza, meanwhile, led
the Campbell defense with 15 digs.
For the Cavaliers, senior outside hitter Lauren Dickson led the way
with a game-high 15 kills on 33 attempts with only one error,
hitting .424 on the afternoon. The Austin, Texas native added seven
digs and one block assist in the match for 15.5 total points.
Freshman middle blocker Tobi Farrar also notched eight kills, with
Simone Asque recording six and the trio of Sydney Hill, Jessica
O'Shoney and Kendahl Voelker all contributing five kills each.
In the opening frame, the Camels owned a 23-20 lead over UVA, as Allyson
Goldbach knocked a score past the Cavalier defense. A pair of
Virginia points then brought the game to a 23-22 margin before
Goldbach, again, found space to grab another kill, her fourth of
the set. At set-point for the Camels, a pair of UVA kills, an ace
and a CU attack error gave the Cavaliers a come-back win, 26-24.
Werner ended the frame with seven of her nine kills, with
Virginia's Lauren Dickson matching her. Farrar also chipped in five
scores for UVA.
The Camels claimed only a -.030 attack percentage in the second
set, totaling seven kills and eight errors on 33 attempts, while
the Cavaliers tallied 13 kills on 45 attempts with seven miscues
for a .133 rate, both teams' worst of the match. Virginia would go
up 2-0 on the Camels with a 25-18 win, however, led by O'Shoney's
four kills.
The third
and final set was marked by a .471 (18-2-34) team attack rate by
the Cavaliers, who put away the Camels by a 25-17 score, despite a
.357 (13-3-28) CU attack percentage. Dickson and junior right side
Kendahl Voelkner fueled UVA with five kills each, while and
tallied

The Camels will next be in action Friday, Sept. 11 back in Buies
Creek, opening their Atlantic Sun slate with defending regular
season champion Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m. inside the John W.
Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.
