CREEK, N.C. - Four Camels scored in double figures and Atlantic Sun
Conference leader Campbell defeated Stetson 81-55 Saturday at Gore
Arena.
Jonathan
Rodriguez led the Camels with 17 points, Lorne Merthie added 16,
Preston Dodson added 14 and William Kossangue 12 for the Camels
(11-5, 6-1), who won their third-straight and fifth in the last six
games.
Campbell
stands 6-1 in the league for the first time since joining the A-Sun
in 1994-95. CU's 11-5 overall record marks the program's best
start since the 1993-94 squad started 12-4.
Stetson
(4-12, 2-6) dropped its fifth in the last six outings. The Hatters
shot just 37.7 percent from the floor and only 5-of-27 from 3-point
range and committed 16 turnovers, which the Camels converted into
23 points. Ridge
Graham and Tyshawn Patterson led Stetson with 14 points, while A.J.
Smith added 11.
Rodriguez
made 6-of-10 from the floor, while pulling down a game-high 7
rebounds for the Camels, who improved to 8-1 at home (4-0 vs.
league opponents) this year. Dodson added 6 boards, while hitting
6-of-7 from the line. Merthie canned 4-of-5 from long range, while
Kossangue connected on 5-of-6 from the field and made both of his
treys.
Hartley hit career highs in assists (13) and steals (6) for the
Camels, who entered the game ranked 6th in the nation in steals
(11.1) and 11th in turnover margin (+4.6).
Campbell
shot 51.8 percent from the floor, including 9-of-14 (.643) from
3-point range and allowed only 3 second-chance points, just one in
the second half.
CU
rode an 11-2 run to a 30-14 lead with 7:34 to play in the opening
period. The Camels made 11 of their first 18 shots, including
4-of-5 from 3-point range. Stetson answered, however, with a 13-5
burst and cut the gap to 35-27 on Liam McInerney's 3-point play
with 59 seconds remaining.
CU
closed the half with a 5-0 spurt, capped by Junard Hartley's steal
and feed to Lorne Merthie for a transition lay-up just before the
buzzer and the Camels led 40-27 at the break. CU then scored the
first two buckets of the second period and Stetson never got closer
than 14 the rest of the way.
The
Camels led by as many as 29 and improved to 10-1 this year when
holding opponents to less than 70 points in a game.
Rodriguez
scored 11 first-half points, while Dodson and Merthie added 8
apiece for the Camels, who shot 53 percent from the floor (4-5 from
3-point territory) and scored 14 points off 10 Stetson first-half
turnovers. Hartley had 7 assists and 5 steals in the opening
period alone.
Graham
led Stetson with 10 points in the opening half. The Hatters made
just 10-of-25 shots (.400), 3-of-13 from 3-point range.
Rodriguez now has 1933 points in 107 games during his career. He
needs just 15 to break the school's all-time scoring record of 1947
set by Sam Staggers from 1973-77.
The Camels return to action Thursday in a 7:15 p.m. (CST) tip-off
at Belmont.
