BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Shaunda Strayhorn tallied 18 of her career-high
25 points in the second half, leading Belmont past Campbell, 70-59,
in Atlantic Sun women's basketball action Saturday afternoon inside
the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
Campbell falls to 11-8 on the year and 6-4 in A-Sun play, while the
Bruins move to 10-9 and 5-6 in conference games.
Senior center Ashley Williamson led the way
for the Lady Camels with 11 points and a season-high 15 rebounds,
notching her second double-double of the year. Junior guard Courtney
Cannon joined Williamson in double figures with 11 points,
adding eight boards and a pair of assists.
Sophomore guard Kate Cloxton also posted
nine points with seven assists, while sophomore forward Katelyn
Bass totaled a season-high eight points with five rebounds. Amanda
O'Neill gathered seven points, while Geami Britt collected
six.
Strayhorn's 25 came on 4-of-10 shooting with three baskets from
distance, and a 14-for-18 performance from the free throw line.
Sophomore post Haley Nelson added 14 points and eight rebounds in
the win, while senior guard Amber Rockwell gathered 10 points and
four steals.
The Bruins opened the contest with a 16-7 advantage, as Haley
Nelson drained a bucket in the paint at the 11:52 mark.
By the 8:47 mark, the Lady Camels were within one by way of an 8-0
run, capped off by and Amanda O'Neill three.
Campbell took the lead with 5:44 remaining, as Katelyn
Bass nailed an eight-footer, giving the Lady Camels a 21-19
advantage.
Bass added another six in the half's final three minutes, putting
CU up 32-26 at the break.
A 16-10 run for the Bruins to open the second stanza, however,
forced the tie at the 11:15 mark, and Belmont took the lead at 9:47
with a Kristin Nash three from the corner, 47-45.
Down four, 54-47, with 6:13 remaining, the Lady Camels surrendered
another Belmont three, this time from Kristin Bunch, elevating the
Bruin lead to seven.
Over the final 3:57, Strayhorn collected 13 of her career-high 25,
leading the Bruins to the 70-59 win.
The Lady Camels will be in action again on Monday, taking on
Lipscomb inside the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
