INDIANPOLIS, Ind. - Campbell's football team (2-3, 1-1 Pioneer
Football League) controlled the clock and the ball for over 35
minutes in picking up the team's third-ever conference game and
fourth-ever road win in a 27-10 victory over Butler (2-3, 0-2 PFL)
on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Butler Bowl. The Camels, for the second
consecutive week, were able to control the ball and ball in rushing
for 270 yards. The win over the reigning PFL Co-Champion Bulldogs
also stopped a three-game losing streak.
The Camels were led by Rashaun
Brown's 91 yard rushing on 20 attempts. Carl
Smith tallied 78 yards on his 15 carries. Daniel
Polk put up 61 yards rushing and 66 yards passing. Redshirt
junior Randel
Herring totaled 12 tackles and a sack for the defense. Fellow
redshirt junior Milton
Brown had an outstanding game with six tackles and a sack. The
CU defense limited the potent Butler offense to only one first down
in the second half until the last possession for the Bulldogs.
After a failed kick by Campbell to start the game and a Butler
turnover to stop their first drive, CU got on the board first on
junior Rashaun
Brown's two-yard rush. The made Adam
Willets extra point put the Camels up 7-0 with 1:03 remaining
in the first quarter. The drive for CU covered nine plays and 69
yards. The turnover for Campbell to set up the drive was an
interception by redshirt junior linebacker Chris Price and was the
first of his career.
Butler dented the scoreboard with a field goal on the team's second
drive. The drive covered 10 plays, 40 yards and 5:23. The drive was
finished on David Lang's 35-yard field goal.
The Camels offense kept going and scored on the ensuing drive. CU
marched down the field on an 11 play, 65 yard drive that was
finished on the forwarded pitched touchdown pass from redshirt
senior Daniel
Polk to redshirt senior Mike
Stryffeler. The touchdown reception for Stryffeler was his
first of the season. The extra point was missed to keep the score
at 13-3 with 7:17 remaining in the second quarter.
Butler got to within three on the next possession as Matt Kobli ran
it in from 19-yards out. The Lang extra point was made to put
Butler down 13-10 with 2:31 remaining in the half.
The three-point margin would hold into the second half for
Campbell. The Campbell offense added to the lead when they took
over on the Butler 48-yard line after a booming 63-yard punt from
junior Ted
Moore and a defensive stop for CU. The Camels were able to put
seven on the board on Carl
Smith's one-yard fourth down jaunt and Willets' made extra
point with 2:09 remaining in the third quarter.
After a stop by the Butler defense, the CU special teams came up
with a fumble recovery when junior Erik Feliciano jumped on a loose
football at the 22-yard line. The Campbell offense was able to
punch it from two-yards out on the option pitch from Polk to
redshirt junior C.J.
Oates. The touchdown was Campbell's third rushing touchdown of
the day and put Campbell up 27-10 after the Willets extra point
with 9:34 remaining in the game. The score would be all the Camels
needed in the same score victory..
After the team's bye next week, the Camels return home to take on
Drake on Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at Barker-Lane Stadium/Ed Gore
Field.
