SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Eric Debrah scored the game's lone goal in the
44th minute and Campbell defeated USC Upstate 1-0 Saturday in
Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer action.
Campbell (3-3-3, 1-1-0) allowed only three Upstate shots and only
one on target over the full 90 minutes, while improving to 17-2-2
against A-Sun regular season opponents since the start of the 2008
season.
Timo Foerster had all three of the Spartans' shots and Camel keeper
Ryan Amons only had to make a save on his 30th-minute effort while
recording his third shutout of the season.
Campbell finished with a 14-3 advantage in shots, 8-2 in the final
half. Upstate dropped to 1-5-3 overall, 0-2-0 in the A-Sun.
Debrah, a senior who earned a roster spot as a walk-on during
pre-season drills, scored his first career goal on a header off
Mitchell Cardenas' cross just before the half.
Campbell nearly doubled the lead in the 49th minute when Khalil
Johnson's shot beat Upstate keeper Jason McCabe, but hit the cross
bar.
The woodwork again stopped the Camels in the 79th minute on Brian
Urioste's shot that hit the post. The rebound fell to Cardenas,
but his shot sailed high of McCabe's bar.
Campbell has run its record in A-Sun regular season games to 33-6-5
since the start of the 2005 season. CU owns a 4-0 advantage
against the Spartans since Upstate joined the A-Sun in 2007.
The Camels also improved to 21-2-2 in their last 25 games during
the month of October. Over than 25-match stretch, Campbell has
out-scored its October competition by a 50-26 margin.
Campbell returns to action Tuesday in a 7:00 p.m. match at
Furman.
