MACON, Ga. - On the heels of an outstanding freshman season,
Campbell's Pirjo Leppikangas has been named to the Atlantic Sun
All-Freshman team, the league announced Monday.
"We are exceptionally pleased that Pirjo was honored as a member of
the All-Freshman team," said fifth-year head coach Todd Clark.
"She had a great season, particularly the second half of the year
as she got acclimated to the college game. She has a tremendous
impact on our team both on the field and in terms of her
personality."
Leppikangas played an integral role in Campbell's attack this year,
seeing time as a midfielder and forward. Leppikangas tied for
second on the team with four goals in her freshman campaign and
registered a pair of assists as well. Her ten points were
Campbell's fourth highest individual total, and she led the Camels
with 38 shots.
The Helsinki, Finland native started all 19 contests for Campbell
in 2010 and scored the game-winning goal against High Point in just
her second-career match. Leppikangas ended this year's campaign by
adding another game-winning goal and assist against Longwood on
Senior Night. She assisted on the game-winner at Belmont and also
scored at North Florida and against USC Upstate.
"She can serve a ball as well as any female I have ever coached and
is, in my mind, the most physically powerful athlete in the
Atlantic Sun," said Clark. "Her ability to explode on the ball and
run at defenders on the flank made for a miserable night for
several opponents and in several games she had to face multiple
players as other coaches tried to sort her out. We are ecstatic to
have her here and I am even more enthusiastic to see what 2011 has
in store for us. Pirjo is one of numerous players we will count on
to help us seek a Big South Conference title and she is more than
capable of helping us attain that goal after being honored by our
Atlantic Sun peers this season."
Leppikangas joins teammates Kaili Terry (2006), Olga Ekblom (2008),
and Jeannie Borda (2009) as the fourth player on the roster to have
received all-freshman recognition from the league.
Florida Gulf Coast defender KC Correllus earned both A-Sun Player
of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards while helping
the Eagles to an unbeaten 8-0-2 record in conference play.
Correllus, a unanimous first-team selection, helped the FGCU
defense post 11 shutouts on the year, including eight clean sheets
in league action.
Jacksonville's Brian Copham was named Coach of the Year as JU
produced five all-conference team members after finishing behind
FGCU; the Dolphins will serve as the top seed in the upcoming A-Sun
postseason tournament.
North Florida's offensive tandem of Lauren Hopfensperger and
Carolina Lencina were the only freshman named to the first team as
the duo accumulated 20 and 17 points, respectively. Lencina was
named Freshman of the Year by the league.
Campbell finished the year 8-10-1 overall (4-6 A-Sun) and just two
points behind East Tennessee State for the final berth in the A-Sun
tournament. The Camels will move to the Big South Conference next
year.
