Longwood Downs Lady Camels in Opener

FARMVILLE, VA.-Longwood forced 25 Campbell turnovers and drained eight three-point baskets to defeat the Lady Camels 71-48 in the Lancer Classic inside Willett Hall Friday night.

Longwood moves to 1-0 on the season, while Campbell falls to 0-1 in the season opener for both teams.

Sophomore forward Chelsea Coward paced Longwood with 12 points, leading all scorers, adding four rebounds. Mina Jovanovic joined Coward in double figures with 10 pointsm tacking on seven rebounds and seven assists.

Bria White also poured in eight points, while Morgan Smith recorded seven. Brittany Jones, Erin Neal, Emilee Dunton and Heather Tobeck all posted six points for the Lancers. Smith, a junior forward, led the team on the glass with eight rebounds.

Junior guard Amanda O'Neill led the Lady Camels with nine points, going 1-for-5 from the floor, but connecting on 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. The Oak Hill, Va. native added five rebounds and two steals in the loss. Sophomore Jazmine Cooper, senior Courtney Cannon and freshman Ashley James each tallied seven points.

James, a rookie forward from Round Rock, Texas, led Campbell with six rebounds. O'Neill, Cooper and senior forward Lauren Yesh all added five boards apiece. Junior guard Kate Cloxton chipped in a career-high five steals with four assists. The Lady Camels grabbed 16 steals on the night, the most since swiping 21 against Florida Atlantic on Jan. 17, 2004.

Leading 17-13 with 12:33 to play in the first half, Longwood notched a 22-9 run over the next 12:13 to take a 39-22 advantage. A Cannon lay-in with six seconds remaining brought the game to a 39-24 halftime score. The Lancers converted 4-of-8 first half threes, with a pair coming from Coward, who posted 10 points in the frame.

Out of the break, the Lady Camels cut the lead to 13, scoring four of the half's first five points, including a layup from Cooper. From there, the Lancers extended their lead to 20, hitting the mark with 12:46 remaining with a pair of Brittanni Billups free throws. The Lancers converted another four buckets from distance in the second half, led by a couple from Bria White.

The Lady Camels will be back in action tomorrow, continuing play in the Lancer Classic, taking on Appalachian State (1-0) at 3 p.m. The Mountaineers defeated Marshall (0-1) 64-55 in the tournament's opening game.
