Laurinburg, N.C. - The Campbell wrestling team rode a pair of pins
and the momentum from a quick start to earn their first victory of
the season over St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Harris Court.
The 33-14 victory followed a 28-16 loss to the Apprentice School
that Campbell (1-12) suffered earlier in the day.
The Camels jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead on the strength of a
major decision from CJ Gittens, a decision for Richie
Apolinar, and a pin from Kelin Bidelspach.
Bidelspach's pin was his first of the year.
St. Andrews (2-11) narrowed the lead to 17-8, but never got closer
as CU won the next three matches, with John Merickel picking up a
major decision, Derek Tomasone winning by
injury default, and Parker Burns scoring his
second first-period pin in as many tilts.
Earlier in the day, the Camels fell to the Apprentice School
28-16. The Builders, currently ranked No. 5 in the National
Collegiate Wrestling Association, improved to 18-6 on the year.
In the 197 pound weight class, Burns registered a pin over
Apprentice's Stuart Roes at the 1:43 mark. Gittens claimed a major
decision victory at the 125 spot, while Jake Fose and Tomasone
tallied decision victories in their individual matches.
The Campbell grapplers return to the mat Tuesday as they host the
UNC-Greensboro Spartans in their home finale. The match is slated
for a 7 p.m. start inside the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation
Center.
