Football Adds Nick Cavallo and Andre Fontenette To Staff

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell head football coach Dale Steele has added Nick Cavallo and Andre Fontenette to his coaching staff for the 2010-11 season.

Cavallo will serve as the defensive line coach at Campbell after spending the last season at Purdue as a graduate assistant also working with the defense. Last season the Boilermakers' defense ranked ninth in the Big Ten in scoring defense, fourth in pass defense, ninth in turnover margin, seventh in total defense and fourth in sacks. On game days, Cavallo was in the booth and in charge of identifying offensive personnel and determining blocking schemes of the opposing offensive line. Cavallo, besides his game day work, was also involved with recruiting and evaluating potential recruit's films. He also was responsible for coaching and running individual drills for the defensive ends at practice and ran the offensive scout team against the defense.

Prior to Purdue, the Connecticut native worked for Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, as a player development specialist from July 2008-January 2009. Football-wise, he assisted in video breakdown and scout team preparations, and off the field, he mentored student-athletes while coordinating study table sessions.

From January 2007-July 2008, Cavallo worked as the Director of Football for 100% Performance in Indianapolis where he trained athletes in football skills, speed, strength and agility. For the past three years he has worked as the defensive line coach for Make Plays Foundation, an organization that runs free camps for underprivileged youths in the Lubbock, Texas area.

Cavallo was a member for the Purdue football team from 2002-06, primarily as a backup defensive end and special teams performer. In 41 career games, Cavallo recorded 15 tackles, including a sack, with two pass breakups and one forced fumble.

As a senior at Purdue, Cavallo received the team's Leonard Wilson Award for unselfishness and dedication after appearing in all 14 games and making 11 tackles. He had a career-high four tackles vs. Minnesota on Sept. 23, 2006, forced a fumble against Iowa on Oct. 7, 2006 and came up with a sack against Northwestern on Oct. 14, 2006. Cavallo was named the team's game captain on Sept. 30, 2006 vs. Notre Dame and was named special teams' player of the game twice his final season.

A native of Plainville, Conn., Cavallo earned a bachelor's degree in law and society with double minors in organizational leadership & supervision and African American studies. He is currently working on his master's degree in science in technology with an anticipated graduation date of May 2011. He is married to former Purdue softball player Kristen Schell.

"When Jerrick Hall left we were looking for a person to fill that position that would continue with what Jerrick laid the ground work for the last three seasons," Steele stated. "From the minute we met him we knew Nick was a great fit for Campbell. He is a talented young football coach that has both played the position and been around winning programs at both Purdue and Rutgers in his coaching career. We feel like he can help us recruit in areas that we would like to get into. From the time he started Nick has fit right in and gotten to work. We are pleased to have him. Even though he has only been on staff for a short period of time he has fit in so well that it feels like he has been part of the program since we started it. We are excited to have him and see him take over our defensive line and continue their constant improvement."

Fontenette, who will fill the role of coaching the wide receivers, comes to Campbell after most recently working as the offensive assistant in charge of wide receivers at Maine for the last two seasons. Last season the Black Bears led the CAA in passing offense, ranked fourth in the conference in scoring offense and seventh in total offense. Maine had a receiver, Landis Williams, who led the conference in receptions and receiving yards per game under his tutelage. Fontenette also worked as the special teams' assistant at Maine where he worked with the gunners on the punt team and ran special teams scout teams. In 2008 he aided Maine to the FCS playoffs with an 8-5 record.

Prior to working at Maine, Fontenette spent the 2007 season as the wide receivers coach at Wagner College. As the graduate assistant coach, he worked with all 10 receivers and ran daily meeting with the group to present game film, watch opponent film and practice film. He also prepared a daily practice plan for his receivers group.

He began his coaching career at Brockport State University, where he was also the wide receivers coach as graduate assistant for the Golden Eagles during the 2006 season. In addition to his on-the-field duties, Fontenette was involved with recruiting and helped produce weekly game plans. Additionally he held the role of junior varsity head coach and offensive coordinator

Fontenette was a three-year letterwinner and a two-year starter for Syracuse University. He ended his career with 33 catches for 379 yards. His best individual season came during his senior campaign when he caught 15 passes for 222 yards. He hauled in a 43-yard reception against Rutgers in 2004. During his playing career, Fontenette was honored with the Ray Martino Award, which is presented to the player who presents loyalty, enthusiasm and perseverance to the Orange football program.

The Rochester, N.Y. native graduated from Syracuse in 2004 with his bachelor's in sociology with minors in communications and African American studies.

"We are excited to have Andre join our staff as the receivers coach. He has a wealth of experience at the FCS and FBS level," Steele explained. "Andre played the position in college at Syracuse and coached both a Division II and Division III level before moving into Division I. He coached the leading receiver in the CAA last season on a football team that has made the playoff recently at the University of Maine. We are excited to have him join the staff both as a position coach and as a recruiter. He'll help us in some areas in recruiting that we want to explore and get into. He is a welcome addition and we are excited to have him join our offensive staff and look forward to him making a positive contribution to our football team."

Cavallo and Fontenette join Art Link, Oscar Olejniczak, Greg Williams, Jody Stouffer and Landon Mariani on the Campbell coaching staff.

"We are excited about the staff. It helps having some experienced guys that have been here for three plus years in Oscar, Art and Landon," Coach Steele explained. "Those three help add some stability and knowledge of how things are done to the program. Greg has around the sport of football for a long time and he is able to add some guidance to the overall staff. The new coaches are enthusiastic and excited about what we are doing here. Both Nick and Andre really wanted to become part of our program. They both work well and fit well with the rest of the staff. As a group the staff has meshed together very well. I'm extremely pleased with the smoothness of the transition. We will continue to do nothing but get better. I told the team that when people leave the program that it is a compliment to the program. When you hire new people, you want to hire people that are going to come in and make an improvement in your program and that is certainly the way we feel about Nick and Andre. But more importantly they (Nick and Andre) have meshed so well with our players that it is like these two coaches have been here all along."

Fontenette replaces former Campbell coach Paul Troth, while Cavallo takes the place of former Campbell coach Jerrick Hall.
