BUIES
CREEK, N.C. - Head coach Todd Clark has announced the addition of
two players to the Campbell University women's roster. Former
Raleigh (N.C.) Broughton High School standout defender Taylor
Brown returns
to her home state after playing last season at University of South
Florida. She is joined by Burbank, Calif., goalkeeper Ryann
Torrero from the
University of Wyoming.
Brown returns to the area after appearing in 15 matches for the
Bulls in 2009. While competing against nationally ranked Big East
foes such as Notre Dame, Connecticut, and Rutgers, Brown compiled
over 450 minutes, including a start in the team's win over DePaul.
She also added minutes versus nationally ranked Florida, University
of Central Florida and LSU. Brown got her first taste of Atlantic
Sun Conference play in the Bulls' win at Stetson.
Prior to committing to USF, Brown was a member of the highly
regarded CASL Spartan Elite program for coaches Jay Howell and CU
graduate Rusty Scarborough. She also competed for Broughton High
School and was instrumental in helping her side earn state
championships in 2006 and 2008 as well as the adidas/NSCAA national
championship as a senior captain. She was a four-time letter
winner and rounded out her senior season not only earning all-state
honors in addition Capital-7 honors for three straight
seasons.
Brown completed her experience as an Olympic Development Program
player as a member of the North Carolina State team as well as the
Region III pool and National Camp for both ODP and Super Y. She
was a member of the National Honor Society and earned Distinguished
Academic Honors at Broughton. She is the daughter of Dr. Boomer
and Lisa Brown and has a sister, Jordan (24).
Joining Brown as a spring semester transfer is Ryan Torrero who
comes to Buies Creek after two seasons at Wyoming. She played two
matches in goal in 2008 for the Cowgirls before suffering an injury
and sitting out the 2009 campaign as red-shirt. She has three
seasons of eligibility remaining.
Torrero re-wrote the record books in while at Village Christian
School in Sun Valley, Calif. She holds the record for lowest GAA,
most saves, and minutes played. She earned four letters, was named
team captain as a senior, and played 4800 minutes in the nets
during her career. In addition to leading the school to its first
ever playoff spot, she was twice named to the CIF first team as
well as the CIF Olympic League's Defensive Player of the Year.
Torrero played club soccer for one of the nation's elite programs,
Real So Cal. While with Real So Cal, the 5-foot-9 keeper won
prestigious championships such as the San Diego Surf Cup, the
Premier League of the CSL, and ultimately the Super Y League
finals. She was a member of the 1990 Southern California ODP
program's State Team in addition to her club duties.
Ryan also swam and played water polo throughout high school. She
is the daughter of Jesse and Marie Torrero and she has one brother,
also named Jesse. She is studying criminal justice at
Campbell.
"I am thrilled that two athletes, the caliber of Taylor and Ryann,
have chosen to join us this spring," said Clark, who is entering
his fifth season in charge of the program. "Each is more than
capable of starting for us next season and has been a great
addition to our locker room already. We've obviously known of
Taylor since she was a U16 player with CASL and her experience and
leadership will add tremendously to our team. While we've only
been able to follow Ryann a short period of time, she has equally
impressed me as a player with exceptional potential. Both of these
women have competed at the absolute highest level in terms of club
and Division I competition and we are delighted that they have
chosen to bring their many gifts to the Creek. The addition of
each was quite unexpected, but very welcome."
Last fall, Campbell (9-9-2, 4-4-2) rode a tight defense and timely
scoring to its first Atlantic Sun Championship tournament berth
since 2005. Eight of CU's nine victories came by one-goal margins,
including league wins over Lipscomb, Florida Gulf Coast, East
Tennessee State and USC Upstate.
