BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Senior Brittany Stanley set the
Campbell career strikeout record to lead the softball team
(22-28-1, 9-9 Atlantic Sun) to a 2-0 victory and sweep of Belmont
(10-44, 3-17 Atlantic Sun) on Saturday, May 1 at the Eakes Athletic
Complex. The Camels claimed a 4-2 victory in the first game.
Stanley (10-10) ended the second game in style and recorded her
fifth strikeout of the game. The strikeout broke the CU record for
career strikeouts. The senior has now amassed 487 strikeouts in her
Campbell career to top Lauren Caviness (2005-07).
The strikeout also preserved the West Lafayette, Ind. native's
fifth shutout of the season and allowed Campbell to sweep away the
Bruins. The win also allowed her to reach double figures in victory
for the fourth time in her career. Stanley only allowed three hits
in recorded her fourth shutout during conference play.
The Campbell pitching staff continued to impress and allowed just
two earned runs in 14 innings from the circle on Saturday. Junior
Lauren Stephan (3-4) started
the first game for CU and allowed two runs in 5.1 innings worked.
Freshman Brittany
Arnn came in relief and threw 1.2 innings to earn her third
save of the season. The loss in the first game went to Julie Harmon
(1-16). The second game loss went to Devon Schmidt (8-16), who
allowed just two runs and four hits in six innings.
The second game's lone runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Junior Amanda Miller started the
rally with a one-out single to right. She was on base when
sophomore Taylor McGee launched her
seventh home run of the season to give Stanley all the runs she
would need.
The Campbell offense exploded for three runs in the first inning of
the first game. Freshman Sarah
Forgacs started the inning with a triple over the right
fielder's head. She scampered home on junior Katie Hinton's
sacrifice fly. Stanley then singled through the left side. McGee
followed with a single of her own. After a caught stealing, Miller
punched a single to left field to score McGee. Miller smartly moved
all the way to third on the play at the plate and came in to score
herself on junior Lauren Stephan's infield
single.
The CU attack added a run in the third inning. McGee started the
rally with a walk. Miller moved her to second with a single. A
ground out moved each runner up a base. McGee came in to score the
team's fourth run on senior Robin Leathers' double.
Belmont would break through for both of its runs in the sixth
inning on Ashley Byers two-run home run. The blast was her tenth of
the season.
The Camels wraps up the homestand with a pivotal doubleheader
against USC Upstate on May 8 starting at 3 p.m. The Camels and
Spartans are one of five teams that are fighting for the remaining
four spots left in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Conference
Tournament.
