FLORENCE, S.C. - After missing a penalty kick earlier in the match,
Kaili
Terry sent an 89th-minute free kick flying past the goalkeeper
and lifted the Campbell women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over
Francis Marion in Friday's exhibition match.
The teams played three 30-minute periods in high temperatures and
thick humidity.
Francis Marion jumped in front in the 22nd minute when Michelle
Brown collected a deflection from teammate Rebeccah Hoekstra in the
box and put her shot past Campbell freshman goalie Lauren
Frick.
Campbell knotted the score in the 35th minute after Ashley
Wagner's corner kick was unsuccessfully cleared by the FMU
defense. Freshman Pirjo
Leppikangas eventually gathered the ball and hammered it past
Patriot keeper Casey Durham.
CU could have taken the lead just two minutes later when Kirsty
Meyer chipped a ball over the backline to Cissy
Nitz, who earned a penalty kick after being taken down in the
box by FMU's Kristina Marra. However, Durham saved Terry's penalty
and the ensuing rebound shot from Caitlin
Schneider.
The Camels outshot the Patriots 14-4 over the final 60 minutes of
the contest and hit the post on Terry's headed effort in the 74th
minute, but were unable to seize control until Terry's
game-winner.
"Francis Marion is a team we've always had difficult games with,"
said fifth-year head coach Todd
Clark. "They're very organized and prepared and made the most
of the chances we gave them. Even though we started very rough we
finished very strong. All in all, it was a successful
exhibition-we walk away knowing some things we're good at and some
things we need to improve."
The Camels outshot the Patriots 17-5 and played three goalies, with
junior Jamie
Panfil, freshman Lauren
Frick and senior Anna DiTommaso each playing 30 minutes.
Campbell returns to action next Friday (Aug. 20) when they host
Western Carolina in their 2010 regular season opener. The match is
slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
