BUIES CREEK, N.C.- After a week in which Campbell scored eight
goals and went 2-0-1, Olga
Ekblom and Kaili
Terry swept the Atlantic Sun Conference player of the week
awards, the league announced Tuesday.
The duo combined for 14 points on the week in a draw with UMBC and
wins over Coastal Carolina and South Carolina State.
"It's awesome to have Olga and Kaili win both of the awards, and I
think they clearly deserved it," said head coach Todd
Clark. "Their stamps were on all three games we played this
week. Our girls helped them get there, but their individual
efforts were very deserving."
Ekblom, a junior from Stockholm, Sweden, was named the A-Sun player
of the week for the second time in her career-she also received the
award during the 2009 season. She entered the week with no points
this year but after scoring four goals and assisting on another,
finds herself atop the A-Sun charts with nine points.
Ekblom scored a 90th-minute equalizer last Monday to
ensure a draw with UMBC. On Wednesday, she once again provided
late-game heroics as she scored her second goal in as many matches
in the 87th minute to send the contest into
overtime.
Ekblom tallied a career-high five points yesterday at South
Carolina State when she assisted on Campbell's first goal, then
added a pair of second-half strikes to help seal a 4-0 victory.
"Olga's a very talented player and had an explosive week," said
Clark.
Terry, a fifth-year senior from Carrollton, Texas, claimed the
second A-Sun defensive player of the week award of her career after
helping guide Campbell to a shutout of SCSU and tallying five
points in three contests.
Terry played an instrumental role in Wednesday's 3-2,
come-from-behind victory over Coastal. Despite her role as a
central defender, she assisted on Campbell's first two goals to
force overtime, then scored the golden goal off a free kick in the
fourth minute of the extra session.
The four-point game was the first of Terry's career.
Terry also helped the Camels post their second shutout of 2010 in
yesterday's 4-0 triumph over South Carolina State. She also
assisted on an Ekblom goal against the Lady Bulldogs for her fifth
point of the week.
Terry entered the week leading the A-Sun in points, but her eight
points now trail teammate Ekblom by one. She's also tied for the
league lead with four assists on the year.
The defender has played all 544 minutes for CU this season.
"Kaili's no longer a former forward," said Clark. "She's taken her
experience from being a forward and has used that to become a very
good defender."
Campbell swept the A-Sun weekly awards for the first time since
Sept. 27, 2004, when Danielle Hange and Cadian Lawrence
accomplished the feat.
Ekblom and Terry join former Campbell standouts Erin Switalski,
Jenn Stephenson, and Hange as the only Camels to win the award more
than once.
Campbell looks to continue its three-match unbeaten streak when it
travels to Radford Thursday for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
