Women's Soccer tops VMI 1-0 on Senior Day

Highlights

BUIES CREEK - Campbell got a second half goal from freshman Ashley Clark (Cary, N.C.) and made it stand up as the Camels edged the Keydets from VMI 1-0 on Thursday afternoon. Campbell improves to 12-4-2 overall, 6-1-2 in the Big South Conference, while VMI concludes its season at 3-12-2 overall, 0-8-1 in league play.

CU outshot VMI 8-2 in the first half, but the Camels were unable to mount any significant scoring opportunities. Keydet goalkeeper Amanda Berrios made four saves in the opening period, and the two teams went into halftime scoreless.

Coming out of the locker room, Campbell forced more pressure early in the second half, breaking through in the 60th minute when Clark controlled a ball at the top of the box and played keep away from the VMI defender before drilling a shot past Berrios in the upper right corner of the net.

Clark's goal puts her alone in seventh place on the Campbell all-time charts for most goals scored in a single season. The Panther Creek High School graduate led the CU scoring attack, accounting for ten of the team's 17 shots.

Campbell subbed freely during the second half, as 22 players saw action for the Orange and Black. Pirjo Leppikangas (Helsinki, Finland), Michelle Procaccini (Olney, Md.) and Caitlin Schneider (Southlake, Texas) all accounted for two shots, while senior Marisa Muller (Wilmington, Del.) had one shot for the Camels.

During a half-time ceremony, Muller, Annabelle Gibney (Melbourne, Australia) and Jamie Panfil (New Lenox, Ill.) were honored in a Senior Day ceremony. All three Camel players have been a part of the CU women's soccer program for four seasons, and have seen the team improve from a five-win season during their freshmen year, to the twelve wins the team has going into Saturday's regular season finale.

Campbell will host first-place Radford on Saturday night. Game time is set for approximately 7 p.m., and will start thirty minutes following the conclusion of the men's soccer match against VMI.
