Football Wins Triple Overtime Thriller Over Davidson, 26-20

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Braden Smith completed a 12-yard pass to Chad McMichael with just :13 seconds remaining in the game to force overtime and then scored a diving touchdown in the third overtime to allow Campbell's football team (5-3, 4-2 Pioneer Football League) to escape with 26-20 thrilling victory over Davidson (2-6, 0-5 PFL) on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Richardson Stadium/Smith Field. The win was Campbell's fourth in a row and the first time that CU has topped Davidson in four Division I attempts.

Smith was 16-for-42 in the game for two touchdowns and 290 yards. Smith was at his best in the fourth quarter and the overtimes when he had both his touchdown throws and a touchdown run. Harrison Jordan hauled in four passes for 107 yards and a score. The 100 yard game was the first of his career and the second time that a CU receiver has topped 100 yards in the Division I era.

Davidson's Jonathan Carkhuff completed 31 passes for 290 yards. The Wildcats gained 156 yards on the ground with Chris Gorman running for 151 of them on 27 carries.

The game went to overtime after Smith hit Chad McMichael in the back of the end zone with just :13 seconds remaining to tie the game up after the made extra point by Adam Willets.

In the first overtime Campbell scored first on Willets 42-yard field goal. Davidson tied the game on the team's overtime possession on Chazzo Habliston's made 33-yard field goal. The Wildcats got the ball first in the second overtime but were thwarted on fourth down. CU could not score on the team's possession though with Willets' 35-yard kick missing to the left to force a third overtime.

The Camels took the ball in the third overtime and drove down the field with Kurt Odom running four times for 11 yards. The Camels cause was aided by a personal foul penalty on Davidson to bring the ball to the red zone. Once in the red zone Braden Smith knifed through the defense and dove for the end zone on a five-yard scamper on third down to give CU a 26-20 lead. The Camels were forced to go for two in the third overtime and saw the potential conversion intercepted. Davidson then took the ball with an opportunity to win the game. The CU defense held strong and forced a long potential third down that Steth Monroe picked off to end the game and Davidson's chances.

A CU turnover led to the first Davidson points as Carkhuff connected with Tim Hines for a 38-yard touchdown. The Chazzo Habliston extra point was good to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 14:11 remaining in the second quarter.

The Camels drew three points closer on the ensuing drive on the Adam Willets 37-yard field goal with 9:54 remaining the second stanza. That would be the last score of the first half with each defense playing well. The half without a touchdown for the CU defense was only the second time all season that CU has been held without one in 16 halves this season (Drake – 10/1 – first half).

Davidson added three to the lead on the first drive of the second half as Habliston knocked in an 18-yard field goal to finish off a 14-play, 62-yard drive.

Chris Gorman rumbled in for Davidson's second touchdown of the game to give the Wildcats a commanding 17-3 advantage after the made Habliston extra point with 2:37 remaining in the third quarter. The drive covered five plays and 26 yards after a short punt.

The CU offense finally came through with a big play when Braden Smith connected with Jordan on a 69-yard touchdown reception. The pass was the longest of Smith's career and made the score 17-10 after the made Willets extra point with 11:14 remaining in the game.

The Camels return home to take on Morehead State in the team's final home game of the season at 1 p.m. at Barker-Lane Stadium/Ed Gore. The game will also be Senior Day for CU's 30 senior players and student equipment manager Josh Tate.
