Boiling Springs, N.C. – The sixth-seeded High Point Panthers defeated the third-seeded Campbell Fighting Camels 3-1 on Thursday evening in the quarterfinal round of the Big South Conference tournament.
Campbell concludes the season at 9-9-2, after finishing third in the team's return to the Big South Conference after a 17-year hiatus. High Point improves to 9-9-2 and will face the winner of the Gardner-Webb/Winthrop match on Friday evening in the semifinals.
HPU had a chance to get on the board in the 29th minute when Alex Martinez shot a laser from ten yards outside the box that skimmed the crossbar.
Campbell outshot the Panthers 6-5 in the first half, but it was High Point's fifth shot that garnered the only goal of the opening half. In the 39th minute, Mamadee Nyepon sent a long cross into the box that Karo Okiomah got a touch on, sending the ball past Camel keeper Ethan Hall (Raleigh, N.C.).
HPU increased its lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute as Nyepon scored his fifth goal of the season off a free ball was sent into the box. Ryan Bennett and Okiomah assisted on the goal.
The Panthers almost increased their advantage just over a minute later when Okiomah got behind the defense and hit the outside post on his crossing shot.
Campbell climbed within a goal when Jared Girard (Morrisville, N.C.) scored his first goal of the season in the 71st minute, taking a deflection and sneaking a shot inside the far post.
High Point increased the Panther advantage back to two goals in the 81st minute when leading goal scorer Alex Martinez scored his eleventh goal of the season.
Mitchell Cardenas (Mexico City, Mexico) had three of the team's ten shots, putting one of them on goal. Hall finished with three saves for the Camels.
