Box Score VALPARAISO, Ind. – Campbell's football team (6-4, 5-3 PFL) fell to Valparaiso (1-9, 1-6 PFL) by a 34-31 score on Saturday, Nov. 12, in Valparaiso, Ind. The win for Valpo snapped the team's 29-game losing streak. The loss for Campbell ended the program's school-record five gamer.
The Camels put a pair of players over 100 yards rushing in the game with Carl Smith running for 136 yards and two touchdowns. C.J. Oates ran for 103 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Eric Hoffman connected on 30 of 40 passes for 317 yards and four touchdowns in the win for the Crusaders.
CU outgained the Crusaders 427 to 399 in the game. The Camels also controlled the clock and owned a time of possession edge of 34:13 to 25:47.
The Camels took the early lead as Jordan Cramer finished off another CU drive with a one-yard plunge. The touchdown run was his 14th score of the season and finished off an 11 play, 45-yard drive to give the Camels a 7-0 lead with 2:29 remaining in the first quarter.
Valparaiso tied the game up and marched down the field in a 13 play, 80-yard drive that was finished on Gabe Ali-El's 22-yard run. The Chris Smith extra point tied the game at seven with 8:20 remaining in the second quarter.
CU took the lead back on the ensuing drive as Adam Willets knocked in a 22-yard field goal to give the Camels a 10-7 advantage with 3:31 remaining in the second quarter.
The Crusaders scored next on an eight play, 78-yard drive. Sean McCarty caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Eric Hoffman to give Valparaiso a 13-10 advantage just before the half. The extra point was missed to keep the margin at three going into the break.
The Valparaiso offense added another touchdown to the lead to start the second half with Tim Kuramata hauling in a three-yard touchdown pass from Hoffman. The extra point was blocked to keep the margin at 19-10 with 10:28 remaining in the third quarter.
Carl Smith cut the deficit to two points with a three-yard touchdown rush. The Willets extra point was good to make the score 19-17 with 3:29 left in the third quarter.
Carl Smith gave the Camels the lead on the next drive with his 56-yard touchdown run. The run the longest of the season for the redshirt senior and gave CU a 24-19 advantage after the made Willets' extra point.
Valpo took the lead back on the next drive on a 14-yard pass from Hoffman to Tim Bennett. The big play of the drive was a conversion on fourth and 16. The two-point conversion was good to increase the margin to 27-24 with 12:54 remaining in the game.
The Camels answered and scored again to regain the lead on an Oates one-yard touchdown. The run finished off a 12 play, 60-yard drive. The Willets extra point was good to give the Camels a 31-27 lead with 6:19 remaining in the fourth.
The Crusaders answered on their next drive with Hoffman connected with Ali-El for a nine-yard touchdown. The Chris Smith extra point was good to make the score 34-31 with 3:09 remaining in the game. The score would be the final one of the game as CU last drive was victimized by several penalties that backed up a promising drive deep into Campbell territory and ended in a failed long pass attempt on fourth and 26.
The Camels play the team's final game of the season and travel to Atlanta, Ga. for a 2 p.m. contest at the Georgia Dome on Nov. 19 against Georgia State.
