2011 Football Schedule Released

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Campbell football program (3-8, 2-6 Pioneer Football League in 2010) will open next year on the road against familiar Football Championship Series opponent Old Dominion, Sept. 3, as the 2011 schedule was announced today (Feb. 21) by head coach Dale Steele. The Camels, who open the home portion of the season on Sept. 10 against the Apprentice Builders, are slated to play a total of five home games in 2011. The times for all home games is 1 p.m.

The Old Dominion game marks the second consecutive season that the Camels will open a season on the road. The Camels were able to record a thrilling 20-16 come-from-behind win over UVA-Wise to begin the season last year with quarterback Daniel Polk running for the game winning score in the final :10 seconds. The game against ODU marks the third game in the series between the two schools. ODU defeated Campbell by a 44-13 score in Buies Creek last season and dropped CU by a 28-17 score in 2009. The Monarchs went 8-3 last season and have an impressive record of 17-5 since restarting their scholarship program two years ago.

The Camels open the 2011 home portion of the schedule against the Apprentice Builders on Sept. 10. The Builders are a Division III school that went 2-8 overall and 0-3 in the Atlantic Central Football Conference in 2010. This is the first time that Campbell has faced off with Apprentice.

After an early season bye, the Camels are slated to start conference play at home against Jacksonville on Sept. 24. CU gave the then ranked Dolphins all they could handle last year on the road. The Camels lost by a close 31-24 margin, but the Dolphins were not able to take the lead for good until the final two minutes. The game will also be CU's Family Weekend.

The Camels will then have a road contest against conference rival Drake on Oct. 1. CU is still looking for the program's first-ever win over the Bulldogs. Campbell played Drake tough last year in a 14-12 loss that again came down to the final possession, but have dropped both previous games in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Camels will then return home to Barker-Lane Stadium/Ed Gore Field to take on Butler on Oct. 8. Campbell went to Indianapolis last season and handed the Bulldogs a stunning 27-10 loss. Butler, who won the league in 2009, went 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the league in 2010.

The team makes the trip to upstate New York next to take on Marist on Oct. 15. The Camels lost to Marist by a 42-14 score last season, who went 3-8 last season and 2-6 in the Pioneer Football League in 2010.

San Diego after a two-year hiatus re-enters Campbell's schedule in 2011 with a game on Oct. 22 at Barker-Lane Stadium. The Camels dropped a 43-7 decision to the Toreros the only other time these two conference rivals have played each other in 2008. San Diego went 5-3 in the conference and 5-6 overall in 2010. This year's game will be the annual Homecoming Game.

Campbell then gets back on the road to take on its closest conference rival in the Davidson Wildcats on Oct. 29. The Camels lost a tough 28-27 game to the Wildcats last season at home and are still looking for the school's first win over its fellow North Carolina mate since joining the PFL prior to the 2008 season. Davidson ended 2010 with a 3-8 record and 3-5 mark in Pioneer Football League play.

CU wraps up the home slate with a contest against Morehead State on Nov. 5. The Camels lost a 30-24 double overtime game to the Eagles in Morehead, Ky. last season. Morehead State was 4-4 in PFL play and 5-6 overall a season ago.

Football ends the 2011 season with a pair of road contests. The Camels are slated to take on Valparaiso on Nov. 12 in Indiana. The Crusaders enter the 2011 campaign having gone winless last season and are riding a 20-game losing streak over the last two years. The Camels defeated Valparaiso by an impressive 56-14 score in 2010. The team ran for a school-record 416 yards in the win.

The Camels finish up 2011 playing against Georgia State on Nov. 19 in the Georgia Dome. The game will mark Campbell's first-ever game at the National Football League facility. The Camels lost to Georgia State by a 24-21 margin in Buies Creek last season. The Panthers went 6-5 in the school's inaugural campaign.
