BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Mercer hit 26-of-33 free throws and defeated
cold-shooting Campbell 63-45 Saturday at the University Center.
Campbell (11-12, 5-8 A-Sun) made only two field goals over the
final 11:59 of the game and lost its second-straight game. The
Camels hit only 25 percent of their shots from the floor (13-52),
20.7 percent in the second half (6-29).
Mercer (9-15, 6-7) opened the second half on a 23-6 run, capped by
threes on consecutive possessions by Langston Hall and Mark Hall,
and led 49-29 with 9:55 to play. The Camels never cut the gap to
fewer than 10 down the stretch.
Brian Mills led Mercer with 20 points, including 10-of-12 from the
line. Bud Thomas and Mark Hall added 10 apiece for the Bears, who
shot 34 percent for the game and held a 41-32 edge on the glass.
Mercer defeated the Camels for just the 2nd time in the last 6
games and avenged last month's 80-74 overtime loss at Buies
Creek.
Junard Hartley and Eric Griffin led the Camels with 9 points each.
The 45 points marked a season-low scoring output for Campbell.
Mercer took a 26-20 lead at the break as both teams endured a cold
shooting first half. Campbell hit just 7-of-23 (.304) from the
floor and only 5-of-11 free throws. Mercer, meanwhile, made only
6-of-23 (.261) first-half shots, but converted 13-of-17 from the
line
