TEMPE, Ariz. - Campbell's softball team (8-11) lost its sixth
consecutive game in the opening game of the Diamond Devil
Invitational to Weber State (3-5) by a 7-2 score at Farrington
Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. The Camels have now lost six straight
games. The team has scored two or less runs in five of last six
games during the losing streak.
Junior Christina
Melton (2-1) allowed five runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings of
work. Angela DeVries (2-0) limited the Camels to just four hits and
one run in six innings of work.
The Camels picked up the team's first hit of the game as Keeli
Michael reached on an infield single in the third inning.
Fellow senior Katie
Hinton then walked to move Michael to second. A walk to Taylor
McGee loaded the bases, but the last Campbell batter fouled out
to the catcher.
Melton pitched out of several difficult situations throughout the
game, the most notable was in the fourth when she stranded runners
on second and third with a ground out.
CU wasted an opportunity in the fourth inning. Sophomore Sarah
Ling singled to right center and moved to second on the error
from the Weber State center fielder to lead off the frame. After a
pair of strikeouts, senior Melissa
Elks coaxed a two-out walk to put two runners on base. The next
Campbell batter fouled out to keep the game scoreless.
Weber State broke through for a run in the fifth inning. Ericka
James reached on a bunt single, stole second and went to third on a
throwing error from the CU catcher on the theft. A suicide squeeze
bunt from Lyndsey Minnich scored James from third with the game's
first run.
Weber State added four runs to the lead in the sixth inning. James
doubled in a pair of runs and came in herself on Symbree Minniear
home run.
Webber State put two more runs on the board in the seventh on a
wild pitch advancement from Sarah Clarke and a steal of home by
Heather Jackson.
CU finally put together a rally in the seventh inning. Elks reached
on an infield single and moved to second on Michael's walk. Hinton
then reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Senior Lizzie
Goldbach then flew out and Elks was thrown at the plate trying
to score. Junior Taylor
McGee then singled to load the bases again. Sophomore Sarah
Forgacs reached on a catcher's interference to plate Hinton.
Ling followed with a single to left to score Hinton with Campbell's
second run of the game. That was as close as Campbell could get in
the 7-2 loss.
The Camels will next take on the host institution No. 9/7 Arizona
State at 5 p.m. MST.
