NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Campbell's softball team (19-18, 5-3 Atlantic
Sun) rallied past Lipscomb (18-12, 5-1 Atlantic Sun) to take the
second game of the team's doubleheader by a 5-3 score on Friday,
April 1, at Draper Diamond in Nashville, Tenn.
Sophomore Brittany
Arnn (5-6) allowed just one earned run (three runs total) in
4.1 innings worked. Senior Katie
Woodcock picked up her seventh save of the season with 2.2
innings worked and three strikeouts. The loss went to J.J Nelson
(2-5), who allowed four runs in her two innings.
The Camels jumped out to the early lead in the second inning with
two runs. Junior Taylor McGee reached on a lead-off double.
Freshman Raven
Lee then walked. Senior Lizzie
Goldbach was inserted to run for Lee. After a ground out,
senior Lauren Stephan drove in McGee with a single through the
right side. CU traded an out for run as Melton drove in Goldbach
with her groundout.
The Lady Bisons scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the
frame. Haley Elliott began the trouble with a lead-off single. A
sacrifice moved her over before Rena Cothron walked to put two
aboard. Bridgette Begle then reached on a fielder's choice in which
Elliot was eliminated at third. Breanna Thurman reached on an error
from the CU first baseman that allowed Cothron to race around the
bases with an unearned run. Begle, who took third on the scoring
play, came in to score on the throwing error from the CU catcher on
the following play on a first and third play that went astray for
Campbell.
The Camels took the lead back for good in the third inning. Senior
Katie
Hinton lead-off the frame with a single through the left side.
Fellow senior Amanda
Miller moved her second with a single. Sophomore Sarah
Forgacs ripped a double to the gap to score Hinton and move
Miller to third. Miller would scamper in with the team's second run
of the frame on a wild pitch.
The Lady Bisons drew a run closer in the bottom of the fifth.
Mollie Mitchell started with a single and moved to third on
Caroline Mason's double. Courtney Billington drove in Mitchell with
a single to center. CU then went to reliever Woodcock, who recorded
a pair of strikeout to get out of the inning.
Campbell added a big insurance run in the top of the sixth on
McGee's solo blast. The home run was her eighth of the season. The
hit was her third of the game.
The Camels keep the road trip going in the city of Nashville with a
conference doubleheader against Belmont on April 2 at 1 p.m. EST.
The game will be played at Lipscomb's Draper Diamond due to the
on-going construction at Rose Park.
