BALTIMORE, MD.---After sitting through a lightning delay for the second consecutive match, the Campbell women's soccer team responded in similar fashion by securing another shutout in the 2-0 win over the University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Sunday evening at UMBC Stadium.
The Camels, who improve to 2-0 on the young season, received contributions from a mix of experienced returners and talented newcomers once again. Ashley Clark, a freshman forward from Cary, N.C., secured her second consecutive game-winning goal in the 33rd minute when she scored on a breakaway to put CU in front. Seniors Marisa Muller (Wilmington, Del.) and Annabelle Gibney (Melbourne, Australia) each assisted on the rookie's second goal of the season.
UMBC outshot CU 5-3 in the first half, but the Retrievers were unable to capitalize on any of its attempts.
Gibney would help the Camels extend their lead when she went top shelf to score off assists from Melissa Messier (Palmyra, Va.) and Pirjo Leppikangas (Helsinki, Finland) at the 64:17 mark.
In a reversal of roles, Campbell would be the offensive aggressor in the second half, finishing the period with a 6-2 advantage in the shots category.
The Camels will return to Buies Creek to prepare for its home opener on Wednesday against the Francis Marion Patriots. FMU will enter the matchup 1-1 overall with a loss to UNC-Wilmington and a victory over High Point on its ledger. First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. UMBC will travel to Temple on Friday for a 4 p.m. matchup.
