BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Greg MacNamara's 16th minute penalty kick was the lone goal of the evening and visiting Davidson defeated Campbell 1-0 Wednesday in men's soccer action at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
In a match that was delayed one hour and 47 minutes due to lightning midway through the first half, the Wildcats (4-2-1) made the lone goal stand to win for the third time in the last four outings.
Campbell (3-3-1) dropped its third-straight game, the second 1-0 setback in a row. Despite a 14-8 advantage in shots – 10-4 in the final period – over the ninth-ranked team in this week's South Region poll, the Camels could not score.
The Camels nearly took the lead in the ninth minute when Mitchell Cardenas curled a shot through traffic, but Davidson keeper Chip Sanders dove to his left and was able to push the ball off the right post to keep the game scoreless.
In the 16th minute, Eduardo Rodriguez was whistled for a foul on Davidson's Max Riehemann in the area. MacNamara sent the resulting spot kick inside the left post for his first goal of the season.
Play was halted in the 23rd minute at 7:27 p.m. due to lightning in the area and not resumed until 9:05 p.m.
Shortly after the delay, Brian McGue had a pair of chances, but Camel keeper Ryan Amons denied both. In the 26th minute McGue hit a blast from well outside the box that Amons deflected out of danger.
Three minutes later, McGue dribbled into the area and around Amons. However, the Camel keeper recovered and was able to tip McGue's shot over his crossbar for a corner kick.
Sanders made four of his five saves after intermission. Justin Franz' heavy ball from distance in the 48th minute and Jared Girard's 59th minute header were both held by the Davidson keeper.
Keegan Terry's attempt from a close angle was smothered by Sanders in the 80th minute and the Camels were unable to get off a shot the rest of the way.
Amons finished with four saves in the nets for the Camels, who also dropped a 1-0 decision Saturday at Loyola in a match where they out-shot their opponent 30-5.
Campbell returns to action Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. start at 14th-ranked Charlotte.
