Football Falls at Morehead State

MOREHEAD, KY.-Zach Lewis threw for 339 yards and five scores to lead Morehead State past visiting Campbell 70-28 in Pioneer Football League action Saturday at Jayne Stadium.

Morehead State moves to 2-6 on the season and 1-4 in PFL play, while Campbell falls to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in conference games.

Kurt Odom paced the Camels, tying a single game rushing record with 170 yards (Jordan Cramer, 11/5/11 vs. Morehead State). The junior running back also broke a CU single game mark with 195 all-purpose yards on the day, tacking on 25 receiving yards in the loss.

Senior defensive back Paul Pizzuti also tied a Campbell single game record with 14 tackles on the afternoon, posting eight solo and six unassisted (Lee Stanley, 9/4/10 at UVa.-Wise).

Lewis ended the day with 339 yards on 27-of-32 passing, while Rees Macshara registered 110 yards rushing and one score on 17 carries. Brandon Bornhauser added 68 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Donte Sawyer tallied 89 yards and a touchdown on six receptions, while Blake Stanley  ended the day with 79 yards and two scores through the air. Dillion Blackburn and Rob Lewis led the MSU defense with 12 and 10 tackles, respectively.

After the Eagles struck first on a 10-yard Blake Stanley run just under four minutes into the game, Kurt Odom put Campbell on the board with a 70-yard breakaway run to knot the game at 7-all.

Morehead State struck again with 1:05 to go in the first quarter as Zach Lewis found Justin Cornwall for the 19-yard touchdown pass.

Taking over at the end of the first frame, Odom led Campbell on another drive, rushing seven times for 29 yards on the 14 play march. Dakota Wolf punched it in from the one yard line for the Camels, evening the game at 14-apeice.

Morehead State then answered with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and followed with a 43-yard strike from Lewis to Stanley, giving the Eagles a 28-14 lead with 5:49 remaining in the first half.

Starting the drive with a 15-yard run, the Camels used 12 plays, 10 on the ground, for 70 yards, capping it off with a one-yard punch-in from Dalton Dillon, the first score of the freshman's his career, slicing the MSU lead down to 28-21.

Before the half, Lewis found senior Donte Sawyer for a 40-yard touchdown pass, giving the Eagles a 35-21 lead at the break.

Andrew Yost's third quarter interception set up a short field for the Camels, who cut the Morehead State lead down to 35-28 on a Kurt Odom touchdown catch from Dakota Wolf with 11:35 remaining.

Morehead State responded with three unanswered scores in the third, carrying a 56-28 lead into the final stanza.

Two more Morehead State touchdowns in the fourth gave the Eagles the 70-28 win.

Dalton Dillon collected a season-best 44 yards on nine carries, while Dakota Wolf posted 31 yards rushing and 40 passing on an 8-of-16 clip. Senior Braden Smith added 2-of-4 passing for 21 yards in his return.

Matt Farris collected 10 tackles for the Camels. Jeff Swinton, Steth Monroe and Michael Rudisill also recorded six stops each.

The Camels return home on Nov. 3, hosting Valparaiso. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
