BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Campbell women's basketball cruised to a 102-33 victory over Barber-Scotia to open the 2012-13 season at Gore Arena/John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon. All 13 players for the Lady Camels registered a field goal, while junior guard Monique Spry (Wilson, N.C.) paced the team with 16 points in her first action since redshirting last season with an injury.
Senior guard Tonisha Baker (High Point, N.C.) contributed 14 points and reached double figures for the 54th time in her career.
The Lady Camels improved their record to 1-0 on the season and now hold an 18-4 mark in opening a campaign at home, while the Sabers dropped to 0-4. It was the first time that Campbell has eclipsed triple-digits in points, since putting up 107 against Florida Atlantic on Feb. 13, 2003.
Overall, Campbell shot 56.7 pct. from the field, registered 52 points in the paint and knocked down eight three-point field goals, paced by juniors Jessica Moore (Jacksboro, Tenn.), Casey Elliott (Wilson, N.C.) and Spry with two each. The Lady Camels grabbed 56 rebounds during the contest and limited Barber-Scotia to just 24.
From the free throw line, the team hit at a 75.0 pct. clip and knocked down 18 shots. Freshman guard RaeChaun Edwards (Spring Grove, Va.) was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in totaling eight points.
The transition game for the Lady Camels was impressive as they generated 30 points off of 24 Barber-Scotia turnovers. The team also recorded 30 fast-break points and 51 from the bench.
In the first half, the Lady Camels started quickly as freshman guard Zena Lovette (High Point, N.C.) drained a three to ignite a 16-0 run during the first four minutes. Lovette became the first freshman point guard to start for Campbell since Janice Washington on Nov. 23, 1996 and finished with a team-leading five assists and four blocks along with six points.
A fastbreak layup by Spry at 4:57 of the first began a string of 25-consecutive points for the Lady Camels that stretched into the second half. Elliot ended the first stanza with a three pointer to provide the home team with a decisive 43-13 advantage.
Posting up and leading the team with eight rebounds was junior forward Ashley James (Round Rock, Texas), who had nine points. Sophomore forward Kiera Gaines (Mechanicsville, Va.) grabbed seven rebounds and tied a game-high with five assists, while another seven boards were added by freshman forward Jessica Pone (High Point, N.C.), who also scored six points.
The largest lead for the Lady Camels was the final bucket with 49 seconds left, a fast-break layup by Pone, as the team put up 59 second-half points. Junior guard Jessica Moore (Jacksboro, Tenn.) hit a three to put Campbell into triple-digits and finished with eight points.
Junior center Heather Beadle (Austin, Texas) added six points, while junior forward Roslyn Presley (Petersburg, Va.) tallied five points and three points were scored by freshman forward Jewell Yarborough (Creedmoor, N.C.).
Barber-Scotia was led by Jasmanique Price with 16 points. Lindsey Lee pulled down six boards as the Sabers were held to 17.0 pct. from the field.
