BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Chuckie Looney passed for three touchdowns and Wale Onakoya rushed for 114 yards to leads Marist past Campbell in Pioneer Football League action Saturday at Ed Gore Field at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Marist moves to 4-6 on the season and 3-4 in PFL play, while Campbell finishes the 2012 season 1-10 overall and 0-8 in conference play. The game was the final for CU head coach Dale Steele, who steps down at season's end after five seasons of competition (Campbell restarted its football program in 2008).
Looney finished the day 15-for-21 for 222 yards and three passing touchdowns, while Onakoya carried 15 times for his 114, posting a long of 28. Calvin McCoy tacked on 97 yards and a touchdown rushing, while Miek Rios tallied 60 yards receiving and a touchdown.
Junior safety Nick Kaszei led the Red Foxes with nine tackles, adding three breakups. Terrence Fede collected six tackles, including three sacks, and blocked a kick in the win.
Paul Pizzuti, one of 11 seniors playing in their final collegiate game on Saturday, became Campbell's single-season tackles leader with six stops on the day, pushing his season total to 89. The mark passes Lee Stanley's 2009 total of 88.
Redshirt sophomore Matt Farris, who trailed Pizzuti by three tackles coming into the game, posted eight stops, two forced fumbles and a pass breakup. Farris finishes the season with 88 tackles. Pizzuti and Farris are the only teammates in modern program history to finish with 80 tackles in a single season.
Andrew Yost and Justice Walker both gathered a game-high 12 tackles with Walker adding a forced fumble. Senior Steth Monroe also picked up a forced fumble to go along with nine tackles and a breakup.
Junior signal caller Dakota Wolf notched 86 yards passing and 39 rushing on the day, including a TD run in the third quarter.
Senior Braden Smith gathered 59 yards passing on 5-of-10 passing, breaking the Campbell career record in both categories. Smith finishes his Campbell career with 239 completions and 2,619 yards, edging Daniel Polk's (2008-10) marks of 238 and 2,618.
Kurt Odom and Brandon Chandler added 35 rushing yards apiece, while redshirt freshman Ben Bolling collected a season-high 75 yards receiving on five grabs.
After a holding penalty negated Campbell's first possession, the Red Foxes used five plays to set up a first and 10 on their own 43 when Chuckie Looney found Joe Tralli for a 57-yard touchdown pass over the middle.
Marist added another score to go ahead 14-0 with 24 seconds to play in the first, as Looney passed to Max Jacques for a 14-yard touchdown strike.
After McCoy extended the Marist lead to 21-0 at the 13:54 mark of the third, the Camels began a drive on their own 35. Beginning the march with a Nick Potts completion to Braden Smith, Wolf's 37-yard pass to Bolling set up a first and goal for the Camels on the Marist one. Wolf then went over the top for the score, his seventh rushing touchdown of the year, putting the Camels on the board.
Rios added another touchdown for the Red Foxes in the fourth, as Looney found the senior for an 11-yard strike, giving Marist a 28-7 advantage.
Graduating seniors Michael Bolchoz, Brandon Chandler, Ryan Davis, Sam Eberwein, Vince Mantuo, Steth Monroe, Paul Pizzuti, Nick Potts, Daniel Ritter, Christian Rogers and Braden Smith were recognized prior to the game.
