Campbell defeats Newberry 91-78 behind four in double figures

Video Highlights

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Trey Freeman scored 17 of his season-high 21 points in the second half and Campbell defeated Newberry 91-78 Thursday night at Gore Arena.

Freeman made 7-of-13 shot from the floor and 7-of-8 from the line, while dealing seven assists.  Playing without the nation's 16th-leading scorer Darren White (21.9 ppg), who sat out with an injured hand, Campbell (3-5) used a 10-1 run midway through the final period to build a 14-point lead.

Darian Hooker (18), Reco McCarter (17) and D.J. Mason (12) added season-high point totals for the Camels, who set a Gore Arena record by making 36 free throws (in 44 attempts).  Marvelle Harris chipped in 9 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, plus 3 blocked shots.

Freeman, Hooker and McCarter each hit 7-of-8 from the line, while Mason canned 8-of-10 from the stripe and grabbed 7 boards in 15 minutes.

Mitch Riggs led Newberry with 18 points, including 3-of-8 threes.  Dondray Walker added 14 and Xavier Holmes 11, plus 7 boards for the Wolves, who finished the 2012 season as the 2nd-highest scoring team in the NCAA Division II ranks.

Newberry never led in the game, but was within 48-44 with 15:24 to play when Holmes scored underneath and Campbell head coach Robbie Laing called timeout.

The Camels responded with a 10-1 run, scoring 6 points at the line, to take a 58-45 edge with 12:52 left.  Newberry never drew closer than 9 the rest of the way.

"This was a really important game and an opportunity for some of our kids to grow up a little," said Laing.  "D.J. (Mason) showed some promise and our new perimeter players – Hooker and McCarter – settled in nicely in the second half.  We had an exceptional night at the free throw line.  It was a touch kind of game to play in, but our guys adjusted and figured out how to be successful."

Campbell finished the night shooting 44 percent (26-59) from the field.  The Camels attempted just one three in the second half and got to the line 26 times (making 21) in the final period.  CU converted 19 Newberry miscues into a 24-13 edge in points off turnovers.

Newberry made 37 percent (24-65) of its shots, 8-of-32 threes (.250), but only 22-of-37 (.595) from the stripe.  The Wolves missed 10 of their 16 foul shots in the opening half.

CU jumped to a 12-3 lead as Newberry missed 7 of its first 8 shots.  However, the Wolves knocked down 6 threes in the first period and cut the gap to as little as 2 on 3 occasions.

The Camels shot 40 percent (12-30) from the floor and hit 15-of-18 (.833) from the line before the break.  Hooker scored 13 first-half points (including 3 triples) and grabbed 6 boards.  Harris had 9 points and 8 rebounds in the opening period.

Only 6 Camels have played in all 8 games this year, thanks mainly to a rash of injuries.  Freeman is the lone CU player to start each of the first 8 outings.

Due to NCAA scheduling policies adopted this year, Thursday's game counted as a regular season contest for Campbell, but only as an exhibition for Newberry.

Including a season-opening triumph vs. Averett, the Camels are now 11-0 against non-Division I schools in the 10-year tenure of Coach Laing.

Campbell continues its 3-game home stand Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. against Robert Morris.
