Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Valparaiso rallied from a 14-point first quarter deficit and defeated Campbell 41-21 Saturday in Pioneer Football League action at Ed Gore Field/Barker-Lane Stadium.
Valpo (1-8, 1-5 PFL) trailed 21-7 midway through the second quarter, but scored 34 unanswered points. Red-shirt freshman Jake Hutson ran for a career-high 248 yards and three touchdowns added 52 on three receptions for the Crusaders, who out-gained Campbell 504-287.
Eric Hoffman completed 21-of-23 passes for 200 yards and three scores.
Dakota Wolf ran for 95 yards and one touchdown and connected on 11-of-18 passes for 89 yards for the Camels (1-8, 0-6). Kurt Odom added 63 rushing yards, while A.J. Artis led Campbell with 4 receptions.
Campbell scored on its opening possession for the first time this season. The Camels took the opening kickoff and drove 78 yards in 13 plays in 6:33. Odom scored on an option pitch around left end on 4th-and-one from the six.
Andrew Yost then sacked Hoffman, forcing a fumble at the Campbell 29 and Jeff Swinton scooped up the ball and returned it 67 yards to give the Camels a 14-0 lead with 4:07 left in the opening period. The score marked Campbell's first defensive touchdown of the year.
Sterling Summerville gathered in a screen pass from Hoffman on the right flank and took it 24 yards down the right side line to cap an 8-play, 72-yard drive and cut the lead to 14-7 with 12:45 left in the first half.
Wolf scored on a 17-yard quarterback keeper to end a 9-play, 75-drive that pushed Campbell's edge back to 14 points (21-7) with 8:41 to go in the half.
The Crusaders answered with an 11-play, 72-yard march. Hoffman again hooked up with Summerville out of the backfield on a 9-yard scoring pass. Mike Pando's point after missed wide left leaving the Camels with a 21-13 lead with 3:28 remaining in the second quarter.
Hutson's 17-yard run and Pando's point after cut the Campbell lead to 21-20 with 8:43 to go in the third. Hutson then rambled 62 yards to give Valpo a 27-21 lead and cap an 8-play, 96-yard drive.
Valpo scored on a second-straight 96-yard drive as Hutson ran in from 4 yards to give the Crusaders a 34-21 lead with 11:47 remaining.
Jordan Hildreth muffed a punt return and Valpo's Eric Slenk recovered at the Campbell nine with 5:33 to play. On 3rd down, Hoffman connected with Tanner Kuramata on a 4-yard slant to push the Crusaders' lead to 41-21.
Colten Burris led Campbell with 13 total tackles, while Matt Farris added 11 and Justice Walker 10. Alex Grask had 10 tackles to lead Valpo.
Campbell returns to action next Saturday (Nov. 10) in a 12:00 p.m. kick-off at Jacksonville.
