SPOKANE, WASH. – Gonzaga built a 25-point half-time lead and the 14th-ranked Bulldogs defeated Campbell 74-52 Wednesday night at McCarthey Athletic Center.
Gonzaga (11-1) shot 61 percent from the floor in the first half and made its first 18 free throws en route to handing Campbell (3-8) its third-straight loss.
Led by 7-footers Przemek Karnowski (14 points) and Kelly Olynyk (10-of-10 from the line), Gonzaga out-scored the smaller Camels 44-8 in the paint.
Karnowski led four Bulldogs in double figures, while Olynyk added 12. Elias Harris and Gary Bell, Jr. chipped in 11 apiece for Gonzaga, which led by as many as 31 early in the second period, but hit only 8-of-23 shots (.348) in the final stanza.
Gonzaga finished 21-of-25 from the stripe (.840) and shot 49 percent for the game. The Bulldogs converted 15 Campbell miscues into an 18-5 edge in points off turnovers.
Trey Freeman topped the Camels with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting and 4 assists. Darian Hooker added 11 in 32 minutes off the bench. Campbell played its fourth-straight game without leading scorer Darren White (21.9 ppg).
Campbell shot 32.7 (18-55) from the floor, made 7-of-14 threes and 9-of-15 from the stripe. Gonzaga finished with a 35-32 advantage on the boards.
"Gonzaga was probably better at every position on the court," said Campbell head coach Robbie Laing. "Trey Freeman played awfully well and they put 39 minutes of pressure on him. But we've got to learn how to beat teams that are better and play more effective. We grew up a lot in the second half, out-scored them, and held the number-two shooting team in the country to just 35 percent from the field in the period."
Gonzaga built its largest lead (62-31) on a pair of free throws by Sam Dower with 13:15 to go before the Camels answered with an 11-2 run keyed by consecutive threes by Leek Leek. Hooker's free throw trimmed the gap to 66-45 with 6:59 to go, but the Camels could not draw closer.
The Bulldogs used a 19-3 run midway through the first half and led by as many as 27 before taking a 49-24 edge to the dressing room. The 'Zags shot 61 percent (17-28) from the floor and made all 13 of their free throws before the break.
With two seven-footers in the rotation, Gonzaga outscored the smaller Camels 30-4 in the paint in the first half and converted 9 Campbell first-half turnovers into 12 points.
Karnowski had 11 points and Bell, Jr. 9 in the opening half. Freeman scored 10 first-half points for Campbell, which made 9-of-25 from the floor, 3-of-4 from the line.
The Camels conclude their two-game trip to the Pacific Northwest on Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. (PST) tip-off at Seattle University.
Notes:
- This week's trip is a homecoming for Campbell sophomore guard Andrew Ryan, who hails from Lynden, Wash., which lies 95 miles north of Seattle and 5 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border. Ryan played his first two years of prep ball at Lynden Christian before transferring to Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Ga.) for his final two seasons. Ryan hit 2-of-4 threes and finished with 6 points Wednesday night.
- Campbell is 0-11 all-time against nationally-ranked schools since joining NCAA Division I in 1977-78. Wednesday's game marked the first time since the 2004-05 campaign that Campbell has faced two top-25 teams in the same year. CU dropped a 91-72 decision last month at 20th-ranked Cincinnati.
