ROCK HILL, S.C. – Senior Taylor McGee's singled in the game-winner in the top of the sixth inning to give Campbell's softball team (16-15, 1-0 BSC) the program's first win in Big South Conference play since 1994. CU defeated Winthrop (11-17, 0-1 BSC) by a 5-4 score at Terry Field on Thursday, March 22.
Sophomore Olivia Scarborough (2-0) won her second consecutive game in throwing 4.1 scoreless inning of relief. Scarborough struck out three and only allowed two hits in earning the victory. The loss was taken by Chelsey Schoenfeldt, who allowed three runs in 6.1 innings in relief.
The Camels scored first with two in the first inning. Freshman Ericka Nesbitt started the rally and continued her hitting with a single up the middle. McGee and sophomore Raven Lee walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, freshman Kailey Farmer doubled to left center to plate Nesbitt and McGee with the first two runs of the game.
CU added a run to the lead in the third inning. Stephanie Jones led off the inning with a single. She stole second and scored the game's third run on junior Brittany Arnn's single to right field.
The Eagles took the lead with a four spot in the third inning. Kristy Noble led off the frame with a single. Teja Durante followed with a bunt single. After a pop out and line out, Kathryn Eberlin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chelsey Schoenfeldt walked to drive in Noble with the first run of the inning. Melanie Andrea also walked to drive in the next run. Alex White followed with a single to left to drive in two and give the Eagles the lead.
Campbell tied the game on the home run from Sarah Forgacs in the top of the fourth inning. The home run was her first of the season.
The Camels scored the go-ahead and eventual winning run on McGee's single up the middle in the sixth inning. Forgacs started the rally with her one-out walk. She then stole second and raced home on the McGee's single up the middle and into center field.
The CU defense turned a nifty double play to the sixth. After a single put White on first. Kelly Blea grounded a ball up the middle that was target for center field. CU second baseman Shaela Churchill had other ideas and was able to field the ball and flip to Nesbitt who tagged the bag at second and twirled as she threw on to senior Christina Melton at first to complete the double play.
The Eagles threatened to tie the game up in the seventh inning. Durante singled to right with one out. Kelsey Ritter walked to move the tying run to second. Scarborough steadied herself and struck out the final two to preserve the victory and earn her second win of the campaign.
Next CU travels to North Carolina to take on the Tar Heels on Wednesday, March 28, at 7 p.m.
