CINCINNATI, OHIO –Wooden Award nominee Sean Kilpatrick scored 23 points and Cincinnati defeated Campbell 81-62 Wednesday night at Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats (4-0) shot 63 percent from the field and finished with a 32-10 advantage in points off turnovers against the smaller Camels (2-3), who dropped their third-straight game.
Kilpatrick made 9-of-12 from the floor, 3-of-6 threes, and 2-of-2 from the line and finished with 3 steals. Justin Jackson added 19 points on 9-of-12 from the floor, plus a game-high 9 rebounds and 5 blocks. Titus Rubles chipped in 10 with 4 assists and 3 steals for UC, which claimed a 58-20 edge on points in the paint.
Andrew Ryan led Campbell with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, 5-of-8 from 3-point distance, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Darius Leonard added 16 on 7-of-10 from the field , plus 6 rebounds, while Reco McCarter scored 13 points.
"I felt we played really hard, really competed in the second half in particular," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan. "That's an excellent rebounding team, and it ended up 28-27 on the boards. That shows some toughness in our guys. They press you 40 minutes, and for us to win a game like that, we have to rebound well, shoot it well and limit turnovers."
Cincinnati finished with a slim 28-27 edge on the glass, but converted 11 offensive rebounds in 16 second-chance points. The Bearcats had 14 steals and blocked 8 shots.
"Overall, we played really hard with pretty good composure," said McGeehan. "I thought we executed our game plan by playing off the drivers and up on the shooters, which helped on the boards."
Campbell knocked down a season-high 11 three-point shots in 22 attempts. Campbell shot 43 percent from the floor, but just 12-31 (.387) from 2-point territory.
The Bearcats used an early 11-0 run to open a double-digit lead (20-9). Using a height advantage, plus full court pressure, Cincinnati converted 12 Campbell first-half miscues into an 18-7 edge in points off turnovers.
UC led by as many as 17 (40-23) after Kilpatrick made a pair from the line, but Campbell answered with back-to-back dunks from Reco McCarter and D.J. Mason and trailed 42-29 at the break.
Cincinnati made 18-of-28 shots (.643) in the opening half, including 3-of-5 threes, and out-scored the Camels in the paint by a 26-14 margin. Kilpatrick (12) and Jackson (10) both hit double figures in the opening half.
Campbell made just 11-of-29 (.379) first-half field goals, 4-of-10 from beyond the arc. McCarter scored 8 points in the opening half on 3-of-4 shooting.
The Camels were unable to mount an extended run in the second half, but twice cut the deficit to 12 points. UC extended its lead to as many as 23 down the stretch.
Campbell returns to action next Wednesday (Nov. 27) with a 12 noon start against St. Andrews in Gore Arena.
Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan
On fighting hard throughout the game:
"I really thought we did fight hard in the second half. That is a tough team to play. They are really aggressive for 40 minutes. I thought we settled down nicely. We still turned the ball over, but I felt like our turnovers in the second half were aggressive and attacking. We were breaking the press and trying to be aggressive. Some things that happened were a result of that, but some good things came out of it too. I think that is the kind of team I want to be. I thought we competed. We talked about the rebounding which was 28-27. I am pretty proud of that part. We turned the ball over a little more than we needed to."
On Andrew Ryan making five threes:
"He shot great tonight. I was more proud of the toughness because he was gritty the whole way. He rebounded the ball some and was good on defense. He really helped relieve some pressure in the second half. That is a lot of minutes. You could tell he was getting a little bit tired because he was not coming to the ball every single time late. Part of that is a result of Andrew becoming more assertive on going to get the ball and helping us break the press."
On his team fighting throughout the game and not folding:
"We have a good bunch of guys that work hard. I was expecting there to be resilience coming out of the other day even with the short rest and the travel. I was expecting resilience. I just didn't know where Cincinnati was going to factor in. That is about as hard as a game as you can play coming off what we just faced this week. I felt like we did a nice job responding."
On not playing until next Wednesday:
"I was just telling our guys that I think part of what we are going to do over the week is try to tighten up some things over the first two days or so. We will be off tomorrow and then practice two days of tightening up some things and put in a few more things that aren't going to be super complicated, but will help us in late game situations. We will maybe put in another defense and some things that can help us now that we have experienced some game situations. We start to see what shows up and where you can figure out what you need. We will figure out that during those two days and then we will prep for St. Andrews."
