STATESBORO, GA. – Quinton Ray's steal and lay-in at the buzzer sent Campbell to a 75-73 win over Georgia Southern Saturday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.
Ray scored his only bucket of the night after he turned the ball over while driving into the lane. The freshman out of Middle Creek High School picked the pocket of Tre' Bussey then beat the GSU guard to the basket for the deciding points.
D.J. Mason scored 8 of his career-high 20 points in the overtime to lead Campbell (4-3) to its second-straight win. Freshman Kyre' Hamer returned to his home state and scored a season-high 15 points in 26 minutes off the bench. Andrew Ryan added 14, all after a scoreless opening half and Leek Leek scored 10 for the Camels, who made 6-of-8 shots in the extra period.
Jelani Hewitt led Georgia Southern (3-5) with a career-high 38 points on 11-of-27 from the field and 13-of-14 from the line plus 11 rebounds and 4 steals. Tre' Bussey added 19, 15 after intermission, for the Eagles who shot 37.7 percent for the game.
The Camels had a chance to win in regulation, but Kyle Doyle blocked Ryan's pull-up jumper and Hewitt grabbed the rebound; then called timeout with 4.9 seconds left. Hewitt took the inbound pass and dribbled to mid-court, but was called for traveling as he attempted to call another time out with 1.9 seconds remaining. Doyle then stole the inbound pass, but his half-court heave missed well wide left.
In the overtime, Mason hit all four of his shot attempts, including a dunk off Ray's feed with 1:48 to play that left the Camels ahead 73-69. But Hewitt tied the game from the line, hitting a pair with 1:32 to go and another with 40 seconds remaining.
The Camels again had a chance to take the lead down the stretch and Ray drove into the lane but his attempt fell short and Bussey grabbed the rebound. The Eagle guard dribbled to half-court, but Ray hustled back and stole the ball with 3 seconds left, beat two GSU defenders to the rim and spun a right-handed lay-up off the glass for the decisive points.
"Quinton's a tough dude, no doubt about it," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan. "He's taken on a lot as a freshman, handling the team, and his toughness showed up at the most critical time tonight. When the ball went through and no time was left on the clock, I couldn't believe it."
Campbell's bench outscored the Georgia Southern reserves 38-1 as Mason (8-of-19 from the field) and Hamer (6-of-10) accounted for 35 of those points. The Camels finished with a 45-43 advantage on the glass, led by Leonard, who pulled down 8 boards and Ryan, who had 7.
The Camels improved to 2-2 on the road this year, both at Southern Conference schools (including a 73-66 win Nov. 12 at Appalachian State), by limiting Georgia Southern to 38 percent (26-69) shooting and coming up with timely loose balls.
"I thought we were really tough down the stretch," said McGeehan. "There were a lot of times when things didn't go our way, but we were more aggressive going after rebounds and diving on the floor for loose balls."
Campbell shot 42.6 percent (29-68) on the night, including 6-of-8 in overtime. Georgia Southern made only 2-of-4 from the floor in the extra period, while hitting all 6 from the stripe.
Trailing by five (34-29) at half-time, Georgia Southern opened the second period on a 13-3 run and took its largest lead (42-37) when Hewitt drove to the bucket with 15:01 to play. The Camels responded with a 13-2 flurry capped by Mason's shot that hung on the rim and dropped to lead 50-44 with 8:26 to go. Bussey answered with a lay-in and Campbell's lead swung between 4 and 1 points until Hewitt's drive pushed the Eagles ahead 58-57 with 3:59 remaining.
However, Ryan knocked down a trey to put the Camels back in front (60-58) on the next possession. Ryan canned a pull-up jumper from the left side for a 62-58 lead with 2:30 remaining, but the Camels did not score again in regulation. Bussey's trey from the right corner rattled in with 1:20 to go setting up the final sequence.
Mason and Hamer came off the bench to fuel a 15-6 Camel run midway through the first half. Hamer had 6 points in the burst, including a stick-back with 6:46 left that gave the Camels a 26-17 advantage.
Campbell led 34-29 at the break despite a big first half from Hewitt, who scored 20 points on 6-of-15 shooting (plus 6-of-6 from the line) before the break. The Camels knocked down 14-of-30 shots (.467) and held a 24-19 advantage on the boards in the opening stanza, while Georgia Southern made only 10-of-34 (.294) from the field.
Leek scored all 10 of his points, including 3-of-4 from long range, in the first half, while Hamer had 9 and Mason 7 before intermission.
"D.J. made some incredibly difficult plays tonight, and I thought Kyre' and Andrew did a great job of handling their pressure when Q went out with two fouls in the first half," said McGeehan.
The Camels return to action Tuesday in a 7:00 p.m. start at UNC Wilmington.
