Chowan defeats Campbell 67-65 in OT

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Warren Powers, Phoenix Butler-Poole and Ashante Ross combined for 59 points and Chowan defeated Campbell 67-65 in overtime Tuesday night at Gore Arena.

The Hawks withstood a 9-0 Campbell rally that forced overtime.  With a chance to win or tie the game in the last 12 seconds of OT, Luke Moyer drove to the bucket, but neither his attempt nor D.J. Mason's follow, fell for Campbell (4-5).

Powers scored 22 points, Butler-Poole added 20 and Ross had 17, plus 13 rebounds for the Hawks, who finished with a 40-24 edge in points in the paint and shot 43 percent on the night, while making 13-of-16 free throws (.813)

Andrew Ryan led Campbell with 19 points, Darius Leonard had 14 and Kyre' Hamer chipped in 11 for the Camels, who shot just 38 percent (22-58) from the floor and hit 12-of-17 (.706) from the stripe.

"One of the things we've been trying to convey to our guys is that it's about us," said first-year Camel head coach Kevin McGeehan.  "We have a wonderful facility, excellent academic support, eat well and stay in nice hotels on the road.  In the end, you have to respect that and the game of college basketball.  We need to respect our opponent and play harder in those moments."

Chowan never trailed in regulation and led by as many as 14 when Ross knocked down a three from the left wing with 12:58 to play in the second half.  Ross' two free throws put the Hawks ahead 43-30 with 10:43 to play, but Campbell answered with a 14-2 run capped by Ryan's steal and lay-up that trimmed the gap to 45-44 with 7:36 remaining.

However, Butler-Poole knocked down a triple from the left corner that pushed the lead to 48-44 and open an 11-1 run.  Chowan led 58-49 after Butler-Poole scored on a baseline out of bounds lay-in with 1:45 to go.  Ryan started the game-tying run with a drive in the paint 10 seconds later and tied the score at 58 with 27 seconds to play.

Butler-Poole drove to the basket at the end of regulation, but his shot, nor Ross' follow, would drop.

"We had a hard time finding the right combination to give us that jolt, the energy we needed, tonight," said McGeehan.  "We showed some grit getting into overtime and in those stretches when we really played aggressive.  In the end, we put ourselves in position to win the game, but fell one play or a missed free throw short."

Hamer's basket gave the Camels their first lead of the game (60-58) with 4:32 to play in OT, but Butler-Poole nailed his second trey of the night to swing the edge back to the Hawks.  D.J. Mason's dunk off Antwon Oliver's feed swung the lead back in favor of CU (62-61), but Power's dribble drive to the basket put Chowan ahead again (63-62).

Mason's tip-in with 2:21 remaining again sent the Camels in front (64-63).  Powers made two free throws with 2:05 to go and CU went 0-for-4 from the floor over the final 1:45.  Greg Alston made the second of two foul shots with 12 seconds remaining for what proved to be the final score.

Chowan finished with a 38-35 advantage on the boards as Butler-Poole (9), Ross (13) and Powers (7) combined for 29.  Antwon Oliver came off the Camel bench to grab a team-leading 7 rebounds.

Despite shooting just 38 percent from the field in the opening half, Chowan used a 12-1 edge in second-chance points to take a 26-18 lead at the break. Campbell shot just 30 percent (7-23) from the floor and hit just 3-of-10 from 3-point distance in the opening half.

Campbell starts a two-game road stretch Friday at Loyola of Chicago (7:05 p.m. CST).
