FARMVILLE, Va. - Campbell junior guard D Janelle Brown (Oklahoma City, Okla.) scored 16 points during a 24-4 run that spanned both halves in a 74-55 victory on Monday night at Willett Hall. D Brown with 17 points led a trio of double-figure scorers senior forward Roslyn Presley (Petersburg, Va.) and sophomore guard RaeChaun Edwards (Spring Grove, Va.), who contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Lady Camels secured their second road victory of the year and improved to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the Big South. Longwood dropped to 3-9 and 0-3 in the conference.
Presley grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds, which included 11 defensive boards, and posted her second-career double-double. Campbell owned a 51-32 edge in rebounding, its largest margin against a Division I opponent this year.
The Lady Camels clicked at a 48.3 rate from the field during the contest as the team saw 11 different scorers contribute. The team shot 58.1 pct. in the first half, its most consistent performance of the season.
D Brown was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc as Campbell made 8-of-16 jumpers from deep. Junior guard Casey Elliott (Wilson, N.C.), sophomore guard Jessica Pone (High Point, N.C.), freshman forward Amanda Coffer (Summerfield, N.C.) and Gaines each made a three pointer.
Coming off the bench was Edwards, who went 5-of-6 and registered 12 points. A solid seven-point and eight-rebound performance was added by junior guard Ashley James (Round Rock, Texas).
Four assist each were recorded by the trio of Gaines, James and Edwards. The Lady Camels finished with 17 in the contest, while the Lancers were credited with 15.
Longwood was led by Kyndal Skersick with 23 points on 5-of-16 shooting from three-point range. A 14-point game was added by Raven Williams, while Deborah Headen registered a team-high eight rebounds.
Campbell opened the contest on a 19-4 run over the first six minutes as it hit nine of its first 11 shots. James was fed often in the post, totaling seven points during the stretch, while made layups that led to three-point plays were tallied by James and Presley, who had a double-double in the first half.
After finding success inside, perimeter scoring became a key component of the Lady Camels' offense with the team going 5-of-8 from beyond the arc in the first half.
The Lancers rallied by cutting the Campbell advantage to 36-33 on a trey by Skersick with 4:08 left. The back and forth action continued as the Lady Camels scored the final nine points to take a 45-33 advantage into the half.
Three minutes into the second half, D Brown made back-to-back three pointers, scoring 11-straight points for the Lady Camels.
Campbell took a 60-39 advantage with 9:03 left on a layup by sophomore guard Summer Leverette (Turkey, N.C.). The basket capped a 23-4 run as D Brown scored 16 points and made three treys during the stretch.
With the game in hand, freshman forward Qua Brown (Hampton, Va.) and sophomore forward Jewell Yarborough (Creedmoor, N.C.) received some hard-earned playing time for the Camels.
Coming off the strong game at Liberty, Elliott , who registered five points, earned a starting nod for the second time in her career. The last time was vs. Liberty (1/31/13) as Coach Watkins elected to begin the game with the team's role players.
Earlier in the day, the Lady Camels aided the Baruch men's basketball team, a Division III school in New York, N.Y., to its game at Hampden-Sydney. The bus for Baruch broke down outside the Campbell team hotel and while the Lady Camels were having their pregame meal, the bus dropped off the Baruch team for its 4 p.m. game. Baruch fell in the contest, 51-49.
Campbell beings the New Year on Saturday inside Gore Arena/John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center with a 2 p.m. matchup against rival High Point.
