Campbell names Men's Soccer 2000s All-Decade Team

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Fifteen standouts from Campbell's storied men's soccer history have been named to the 2000s All-Decade team in a poll of school officials, coaches and alumni.

The fifth of five all-decade teams announced during 2012 (Campbell's 50th varsity men's soccer season) includes All-Americans Willy Guadarrama and Richard Jata, as well as seven other Camel players who earned All-South region honors.  The team includes Fighting Camels who played the majority of their career in the 2000s and graduated before or with the 50th season class (2012-13).

Under the guidance of head coach Doug Hess (2002-2009), Campbell won five Atlantic Sun Conference trophies (4 regular season, 1 tournament), reached the NCAA tournament in 2007 for the first time in the program's history and earned a year-end national ranking (No.-25 in 2008) for the first time in CU men's soccer annals.

Steve Armas took over as head coach in 2009 and guided the Camels to a year-end regional ranking in 2012 as well as a 2-2-1 record against nationally-ranked teams and a 2-1 mark against the ACC.

Chad Aboud (2004-05, Oakville, Ontario) started every game in his 2-year career after transferring from Detroit Mercy; 1st-team all-conference midfielder and team captain in '05 when CU won A-Sun regular season and advanced to A-Sun final; 2-time A-Sun all-academic team member; 2004 Team MVP.

Mitchell Cardenas (2009-12, Mexico City, Mexico) 4-time all-conference midfielder, including 3 first-team honors; 2-time NSCAA All-Region (1st team All-South Atlantic '12); Selected by Kansas City Wizards in 2013 MLS draft; No.-15 all-time leading scorer in CU history with 78 points (22G, 34A); Led nation in assists (14) in 2012 when he played every minute (1750) for team that finished 12-5-2 with wins over NC State and Virginia Tech.

Sonny Guadarrama (2005, Cedar Park, Texas) named Freshman All-American, 2nd-team All-South, 1st-team all-conference, A-Sun freshman of the year, as well as to A-Sun all-freshman, all-tournament and all-academic teams in 2005; Ranked 16th in the nation in scoring with 13G, 6A, 32 pts.; Invited to US Men's U-20 National Team camp in 2006; signed pro contract with Morelia of Mexican League, where he now plays with Merida FC.

Willy Guadarrama (2004-06, Cedar Park, Texas) finished his three-year career with 82 points (36G, 10A) in 56 matches, 13th in Campbell history; 2005 3rd-team All-American; 2-time All-South Region ('05, '06); 2005 A-Sun player of the year when CU won regular season title; 2-time 1st-team all-conference ('05, '06); 2004 A-Sun all-freshman team; led nation in goals and points scored per game with 21 strikes (46 points) in 20 outings in '05.  Selected by Kansas City Wizards in 2007 MLS draft.

Steve Hollinger (2000-03, Gilbert, Ariz.) 2-time 1st-team all-conference ('01, '02) defender, who also earned A-Sun all-freshman team honors ('00); Jim McVeigh Award winner ('00); Team MVP ('01); Glen Brewster Memorial Award ('02).

Michael Hutchison (2004-07, Virginia Beach, Va.) started all but two games in the central defense over his final 3 seasons, helping CU win the 2005 A-Sun regular season title and '07 A-Sun tournament championship, while claiming school's first NCAA tourney berth;  all-conference and all-tournament choice in '07 when he earned team's Glen Brewster Memorial Award; 2-time A-Sun all-academic team member.

Ben Iiames (2009-12, Raleigh, N.C.) defender finished career with 72 starts (12th-most in school history); started final 70 games of his career; 2012 Academic All-District selection; 2010 A-Sun all-conference choice; Scored golden goal in OT win over NC State ('11); Glen Brewster Memorial Award ('10).

John Izzo (2000-03, Spring, Texas) 2-time all-conference (1st-team '02) choice and A-Sun all-freshman team selection ('00); Finished career with 51 points (15G, 21A) in 63 games; Team MVP  and A-Sun all-academic team member in 2002.

Richard Jata (2006-08, Port Richey, Fla.) 2008 2nd-team All-American and A-Sun player of the year; 3-time 1st-team all-conference; Named to A-Sun all-tournament team in '07 and '08; Stands 16th on school career scoring list with 71 points (28G, 15A) in 51 games after transferring from Furman; CU went 21-1-0 in games when he scored during his career; Finished 15th in nation in goals per game in '08; 3-time All-South choice (1st team in '08); Led team to 3-straight wins over North Carolina, scoring game winners vs. Tar Heels in '07 and '08; Selected by Chicago Fire in MLS draft.

Aaron Johnson (2005-08, St. Charles, Mo.) 2-time A-Sun defensive player of the year ('05, '08) set school career records for goalkeeper matches played (74), started (74), minutes (6805) and goals-against average (1.08), while ranking 2nd in saves (331) and shutouts (21); 2nd-team All-South in '08; 4-time A-Sun all-conference (3-time first-team); 3-time A-Sun all-tournament pick; named A-Sun defensive player of the week 7 times.

Justin Madrid (2005-09, Yorktown, Va.) helped lead the Camels to three A-Sun finals (2005, '07, '08) as well as three league regular season titles ('05, '08, '09); 1st-team all-conference defensive midfielder ('09);  2-year captain presented Glen Brewster Memorial Award for Leadership and Courage in both 2008 and 2009; Set the school career record for matches played (83).

Stephen Oyuga (2006-08, Nairobi, Kenya) 1st-team All-South central defender ('08); 3-time Atlantic Sun all-conference (1st team '07, '08); 2-time A-Sun all-tournament ('07, '08); A-Sun all-academic team ('07); 2008 team MVP.

Vince Petrasso (2006-09, Woodbridge, Ontario) 2009 Atlantic Sun player of the year and 2nd-team All-South; 2-time 1st-team all-conference pick; A-Sun tournament MVP in '07 when he led CU to program's first NCAA tournament; A-Sun all-freshman team ('06); Team won A-Sun regular season titles in his final two seasons; No.-24 on school career scoring list with 54 points (17G, 20A) in 67 matches; Signed pro contract with Harrisburg City Islanders of USL 2nd Division in April 2010.

Devin Sheppard (2003-06, Roxborough, Tobago) 2006 first-team Academic All-American; 2-time All-South ('05, '06) central defender; A-Sun defensive player of the year ('05); 2-time 1st-team all-conference ('05, '06); 4-time A-Sun all-academic team; 2006 team MVP and Glen Brewster Memorial Award winner; 3-time Brodin Award for Academic Excellence winner.

Josue Soto (2007-08, Monterrey, Mexico) 2-time All-South and 1st-team all-conference midfielder ('07, 08); A-Sun freshman of the year in '07 when CU won conference tournament to reach NCAA tournament; Led A-Sun in assists in '08 and chosen for A-Sun all-tournament team; Now plays for Chivas USA of MLS.

Peter Barany (1997-2000, Norrkoping, Sweden) 3-time Atlantic Sun All-Conference team (1997, '98, '00); 4-time A-Sun All-Academic Team; Stands 23rd on school career scoring list with 57 points (26G, 5A)

Kurt Berger (1988-91, Fredericksburg, Va.) central defender set school records for starts in a season (21) and career (78); 1991 Big South all-tournament team; Helped lead team to Big South tournament championship (1991), plus '88 regular season title and '89 runner-up finish; 2-time Coaches Award winner; 2-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll.

Otis Burris (1998-2000, Scarborough, Tobago) Atlantic Sun All-Conference 1st team and all-tournament team defender/midfielder; 2-time A-Sun All-Academic team; 2000 Team MVP

Rodrigo Cagide (1988-91, Guadalajara, Mexico) '91 Big South 1st-team all-conference and all-tournament team; Helped lead team to '91 Big South title as well as '88 regular-season crown and '89 tournament runner-up finish; Only player in school Division I era to have 4 assists in one match (1991 vs. Appalachian State); Still ranks 18th on school career scoring list (23G, 21A, 67 pts. in 67 games); Also 4-time Big South singles and doubles tennis champion.

Pete Coleman (1990-93, Cary, N.C.) starting defender on '91 and '92 Big South tournament champion and '93 Big South regular season (tournament runner-up) teams; named to Big South all-conference 2nd-team; Appeared in 73 career matches and part of teams that won 49 contests in 4- years; '92 Coaches Award; '90 McVeigh Award.

Buddy Edwards (1991-95, Swansboro, N.C.) defender broke school record for career starts (79); 1995 2nd-team All-South region; 1995 1st-team Atlantic Sun all-conference and all-tournament team; 2-time Big South all-tournament team ('92, '93); Member of '92 Big South Championship and '93 Big South and '95 A-Sun runner-up teams; 1995 Brewster Award winner; 1993 and 1995 Coaches Award; '91 McVeigh Award.

Pat Gross (1992-93, Charlotte, N.C.) 2-time Big South all-tournament team ('92, '93) member; 1st-team all-conference '93; Helped lead team to Big South tournament ('92) and regular season ('93) titles; Set national record with 23 assists in '93.

Mathew Hooker (1993, '95-97, Billingham, England) 3-time Atlantic Sun all-conference 1st-team midfielder; '96 A-Sun all-tournament team; Played in 3 conference finals ('93, '95, '96); Big South regular season champ ('93); Still ranks 20th on school career scoring list (15G, 35A, 65 pts.); T4th on school career assists list (35).

Brian Hunter (1991-94, Swansboro, N.C.) 1993 Big South player of the year and All-South 1st-team forward who ranked 5th in the nation in scoring (23G, 10A, 56 pts.); 3-time Big South all-tournament team (1991, '92, '93) member, who helped lead team to consecutive Big South titles ('91, '92) and BSC runner-up ('93) finishes; 1st-team Big South all-conference ('93), 2nd-team Atlantic Sun all-conference ('94); 2-time team MVP ('93, '94); '94 Brewster Award; still stands 5th on school career scoring list (61G, 35A, 157 pts. in 78 games), 3rd in the Division I era (since '77).

Rami Kauppi (1989-92, Lahti, Finland) Only player in school Division I era to earn four 1st-team all-league honors; '91 and '92 Big South tournament MVP; 2-time All-South ('91, '92); 3-time Big South all-tournament ('89, '91, '92); Led team to back-to-back Big South titles ('91, '92), plus '89 BSC runner-up finish; 2-time team MVP; '89 McVeigh Award; ranked 10th in nation in scoring as a junior (16G, 9A, 41 pts.) and 3rd as a senior (20G, 11A, 51 pts.).

Pasi Kinturi (1994-98, Helsinki, Finland) 1996 All-American; 2-time All-South ('96, '98); 4-time Atlantic Sun all-conference (3-time 1st team); 2-time A-Sun all-tournament; Member of '95 and '96 A-Sun runner-up; '96 team MVP; 2-time A-Sun all-academic; 8th on school career scoring list (43G, 39A, 125 pts.).

Nick Lawler (1992-93, '95-96, Stockton-on-Tees, England) 2-time All-South midfielder/defender ('93, '95); 3-time all-conference ('93 Big South 1st team, '95 A-Sun 2nd team, '96 1st team) performer; 3-time conference all-tournament ('92, 93 Big South, '95, '96 A-Sun) team; Big South tournament ('92) and regular season ('93) champion; played in 4 conference finals ('92, '93, '95, '96).

Travis Maloy (1990-93, Raleigh, N.C.) starting keeper for '91 and '92 Big South tournament champs and '93 Big South regular season title winner (tournament runner-up); 2-time Big South all-tournament team ('91, '92); Big South all-conference 2nd-team ('93); School-record 0.73 goals-against average in '91; Career 1.33 GAA (4th in school history); 4-time Big South Presidential honor roll member.

Andrew Maughan (1994-97, Newcastle, England) All-South defender/midfielder and 1st-team Atlantic Sun all-conference selection in '97; '97 A-Sun all-tournament team; '96 A-Sun honorable mention all-conference; 1997 Team MVP and Brewster Award winner; '96 McVeigh Award; Presented 1999 North Carolina Governor's Award for Bravery and Heroism.

Ricky Mobley (1988-91, Swansboro, N.C.) 1991 All-South defender; 3-time Big South all-conference 1st-team ('89, '90, '91); Big South all-tournament team ('90, '91); Helped lead team to '88 Big South regular season title and '91 tournament crown, plus '89 runner-up finish; '88 McVeigh Award; 2-time Brewster Award winner; '91 Team MVP.

Anthony Peacock (1992-93, '95-96, Billingham, England) 1993 All-South defender; 2-time 1st-team all-conference ('93 Big South, '95 Atlantic Sun) choice; 3-time conference all-tournament team ('92, '93, '96); Big South tournament ('92) and regular season ('93) champion; Played in 4-conference finals ('92, '93, '95, '96); '92 McVeigh Award.

Will Poe (1995-98, Apex, N.C.) 2-time All-Conference performer (1996, '97), who was starting keeper on Campbell's back-to-back Atlantic Sun tournament finalist teams ('95, '96); 5-time Atlantic Sun All-Academic team member (including red-shirt year); 1998 team MVP and Brodin Award winner; still stands 3rd on school career list for goalkeeper starts (55), minutes (5040), 7th in GAA, 5th in saves (225).

Jack Robinson (1989-92, Riverside, N.J.) one of only 30 players in Campbell soccer history to record 50 career points (15G, 20A); starting midfielder on '91 and '92 Big South tournament championship team and '89 Big South runner-up; '92 Brewster Award.

Toni Siikala (1992-95, Seinajoki, Finland) 2-time All-American ('93, '95) and All-South forward, who still ranks 3rd among school career scoring leaders (68G, 27A, 163 pts.), tied for 1st in Division I era; Member of 1992 Big South championship team and 1993 Big South and '95 Atlantic Sun runner-up; 1995 Atlantic Sun player of the year; 3-time 1st-team all-conference ('93 Big South, '94 and '95 A-Sun) team; 2-time conference all-tournament ('93, '95) team; nation's 3rd-leading scorer in '93 (23G, 14A, 60 pts.) and country's top goal-scorer (25) in '95; Campbell Sports Hall of Fame inductee (2010).

Louie Arias (1981-84, Miami, Fla.) stands 5th on school's all-time goals-against average (1.54) list in 41 outings; 5th in career shutouts (11); His 8 shutouts in '81 are tied for 3rd in school single-season history; 7th-lowest single-season GAA (1.04) in school history in '81; Ranks among school's top-10 list for keeper minutes played, starts and appearances.

Philippe Bottin (1981-83, '85, Liege, Belgium) appeared in 62 matches and scored 18 goals as a midfielder.  Helped lead team to South Region ranking in '83 and '85 Big South Conference championship; named to 1982 Port City Classic all-tournament team; 1982 team Co-MVP.

Badie Clark (1983-86, Wilson, N.C.) prep All-American played in 65 games in Camel defense, helping lead Camels to 1984 and 1985 Big South championships and 1986 Big South runner-up finish; 1983 Jim McVeigh Award and 1986 Glen Brewster Memorial Award winner.

Darren Dawson (1985-88, Satellite Beach, Fla.) defender on 1985 Big South championship and 1986 Big South runner-up teams; all-conference in 1987 and 1988 Big South all-tournament team; 1988 Glen Brewster Memorial Award winner; scored game-winning goal in 2-1 victory over No.-3 North Carolina in 1988.

David Doyle (1983-86, Dublin, Ireland) program's all-time leading goal scorer at the Division I level (72); 1986 All-American and All-South; NCAA leading scorer in 1986 with 34 goals and 74 points; 2-time Big South all-conference first team; 3-time Big South tournament MVP; Big South champion (1984, 1985), Big South runner-up (1986); 163 career points (72 goals, 19 assists) in 75 games; concluded 19-year pro career ranked among top-10 all-time leading scorers on US indoor pro level; 2006 Campbell Sports Hall of Fame inductee.

Larry Henson (1982, '84-86, Palm Harbor, Fla.) starting defender on '84 and '85 Big South championship and '86 Big South runner-up teams; all-tournament choice at '84 Port City Classic.

Per Jensen (1983-85, Vejle, Denmark) Denmark U-19 national team member was the MVP of the 1985 Big South Conference tournament; defender helped lead team to consecutive Big South titles ('84, '85) after earning South Region ranking in '83; Scored game-winning goal in '84 Big South tournament final and named to '85 Big South all-tournament team; 1985 Glen Brewster Memorial Award winner.

Mike Little (1981-84, Miami, Fla.) helped lead team to 41-22-10 record and inaugural Big South Conference tournament title ('84) during his career; appeared in 71 games with 17 goals; '84 Glen Brewster Memorial Award winner.

Quintin MacDonald (1983-85, '87, Alexandria, Va.) appeared in 69 games over 4 years; 1984 and 1985 Big South conference champion; all-conference midfielder/defender in 1987; 1987 Glen Brewster Memorial Award winner; played for Nashville Metros of USISL.

Peter McCormick (1982-83, '85-86, Stirling, Scotland) central defender who was a 2-time All-South Region (1983, 1986) choice; Led team to South Region ranking ('83) and Big South championship (1985) as well as Big South runner-up (1986) finishes; Scored 19 goals in 59 games; Two-time (1985, '86) Big South 1st-team all-conference and all-tournament choice; 1983 team MVP.

Juha Miettinen (1987-90, Kuopio, Finland) 1988 All-American and 3-time All-South region forward (1988-90); 3-time 1st-team All-Big South (1988-90) and 3-time Big South All-Tournament team; 1988 Big South Player of the Year; helped lead CU to national ranking as high as No.-14 in '88 and to '89 Big South runner-up finish; 2-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll; 6th-leading scorer in school history with 156 points (62 goals, 32 assists); Ranked 3rd nationally in goals (21) in '88 and 4th in points (53) in '90; 2009 Campbell Sports Hall of Fame inductee.

Peter Moore (1986-89, Orlando, Fla.) 4-year starting keeper was a 2-time all-conference ('87, '88) selection and '89 Big South all-tournament choice; School's all-time leader in saves (406) and shutouts (24), who stands 2nd in matches played (73) and started (73), plus minutes played (6512) by a goalkeeper; 1.28 career goals-against average is 3rd in school history; set school record for shutouts in a year with 9 in 1986; His 0.88 goals-against average in '88 still ranks 2nd on school charts; among his 24 career shutouts was a 2-0 blanking of No.-10 Duke in 1988; helped lead team to Big South regular season title in '88 as well as Big South tournament runner-up finishes in '86 and '89. '86 Jim McVeigh Award winner.

Joe Moreschi (1982-85, Alexandria, Va.) starting keeper on Campbell's '84 and '85 Big South Conference championship teams; 1985 Big South all-tournament team member; '85 team MVP; Ranks 2nd on school's all-time goals-against average list (1.12), 3rd in career shutouts (16) and saves (308), 4th in minutes (4670) and starts (50) and 5th in games played (52) among keepers; His 0.97 GAA in '85 still stands as the 3rd-lowest in CU history.  Career-high 17 saves (4th all-time in CU single-game history) in 4-2 double OT loss to No.-14 Duke in '84.

Jim Morrissey (1985-88, Orlando, Fla.) 2-time Big South all-conference 1st-team selection ('87, '88); 1985 Jim McVeigh Award winner and '87 Team MVP; Appeared in 76 matches (still No.-9 in CU history); 1985 Big South tournament champion, '86 Big South runner-up and '88 Big South regular season champ; scored first goal in 2-1 win over No.-3 North Carolina in '88.

David Nisbet (1981-84, Edinburg, Scotland) former Scottish schoolboys member was inaugural Big South Tournament MVP after leading Camels to 1984 title; 3-time (1981, '83, '84) All-South region midfielder; 1984 team MVP; went on to play professionally in Scotland for Hibernian and Meadowbank Thistle.

John Payne (1987-90, Dublin, Ireland) 4-time Big South all-conference team member; 1989 Big South player of the year; 2-time Big South all-tournament team (1987, '89); 2-time All-South ('89, '90) and 3-time team MVP; stands 11th on school career scoring list with 93 points (33 goals, 27 assists) in 76 matches (all starts); led team to national ranking ('88) and Big South runner-up finish ('89); 1987 Jim McVeigh Award winner.

John Reed (1981-84, Stuttgart, West Germany) was a 1983 All-South and 1984 Big South all-tournament team selection; stands 22nd on school career scoring list with 61 points (22 goals, 17 assists) in 73 matches; led team to South Region ranking ('83) and '84 Big South title.

Marty Scarborough (1979-80, '82-83, Buies Creek, N.C.) '83 Glen Brewster Memorial Award winner as a 5th-year senior; played in 66 games during his career; helped lead team to South Region ranking in senior year.

Scott Scarborough (1981-84, Buies Creek, N.C.) still ranks 12th on school's all-time scoring list with 85 points (36 goals, 13 assists) in 69 matches; helped lead Campbell to South Region ranking in '83 and inaugural Big South Conference championship in '84; member of '84 Big South all-tournament team; assisted on first goal and scored 2nd in 2-0 victory over Winthrop in league final; '81 Jim McVeigh Award and '82 team co-MVP.

Ian Wilson (1983-86, Burlington, Ontario) was named to the Big South all-tournament teams in '85 and '86; helped lead team to '84 and '85 Big South titles and '86 Big South runner-up finish; appeared in 73 career games; presented inaugural Brodin Award for Academic Excellence.

Tai Adeleke (1969-73, Obaden, Nigeria) still ranks 16th on school's all-time scoring list with 70 points (30 goals, 10 assists); 1969 and 1970 NAIA District 29 champion.

Kelly Alford (1974-77, Hampton, Va.) All-South region (1976); 3-time team MVP (1975-77); Helped team win 3-straight NAIA District 29 titles (1974-76) and finish 6th in 1975 NAIA National Tournament; All-District 29 team.

John Beyer (1971-74, West Chester, Pa.) NAIA All-American (1974) and 2-time All-South Region (1972, 1974) back; 3-time All-District 29 fullback and team MVP (1972-74); NAIA District 29 champion in 1971 and 1974; twice presented Glen Brewster Memorial Award for leadership and courage (1971, 1973).

Eddie Brandle (1976-79, Raleigh, N.C.) still holds school Division I era (since 1977) record for saves in a season (145); ranks among school top-10 career goalkeeping leaders in saves, goals-against average, matches played and started; set school record with 24 saves in a game vs. Alabama A&M (10/7/77); presented 1977 Glen Brewster Memorial Award for Leadership and Courage when he played the season with a broken wrist; 1977 Greensboro Daily News All-State team; 1976 NAIA District 29 champion.

John Brite (1974-75, Hampton, Va.) 2-time All-District 29 forward who scored 21 goals in 2 seasons; back-to-back District 29 champion (1974-75) and NAIA national tournament 6th-place team.

John Bush (1970-73, North Wales, Pa.) team's leading scorer in 1972 (13 goals); 1971 NAIA Area 5 all-tournament team and All-District 29 team member when he scored a career-high 23 goals (9th all-time in school history); 3rd place in 1970 NAIA national tournament; District 29 champion in 1970 and 1971.

Tom Coutu (1971-74, Pocomoke, Md.) co-captain and All-District 29 back in 1974; helped team win District 29 titles in 1971 and 1974 and produce a 54-11-1 record during his career.

Rick DiCarlo (1972-75, Baltimore, Md.) scoring leader for 1973 (18 goals) and 1975 (12) squads; Still ranks 10th on school's all-time scoring list with 96 points (39 goals, 18 assists); career-high 4 goals in win at Pembroke State (10/15/73); All-District 29 forward.

Tony Ferrell (1973-76, Buies Creek, N.C.) 3-time All-District 29 midfielder; co-captain; 3-time NAIA District 29 champion (1974-76); Area 5 champion (1975); 6th place in 1975 NAIA national tournament

Mike Glover (1970-73, West Chester, Pa.) NAIA All-American (1970) and 2-time All-South Region (1970, 1971) defender; 1970 and 1971 NAIA Area 5 all-tournament team; All-District team and 2-time team MVP; 3rd place in 1970 NAIA national tournament; District 29 champion in 1970 and 1971.

Greg Gonzales (1976-79, Riverside, N.J.) still tied for 26th on school's career scoring list with 52 points (20 goals, 12 assists); career-high 4 goals at Methodist (9/21/76); led 1976 team in scoring (16 goals, 3 assists, 35 points); 1976 NAIA District 29 champion.

George Graham (1970-71, Florida, N.Y.) starting goalkeeper for 2-time NAIA District 29 champ and 1970 team that finished 3rd in the NAIA National Tournament; All-Tournament team at 1970 Area 5 tournament; 1971 All-District keeper
