BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell redshirt junior left-handed pitcher Matt Marksberry was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 15th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft.
Atlanta made Marksberry the 463rd overall pick on day three of the 2013 MLB Draft.
The Batavia, Ohio native went 8-2 on the mound in 2013 with a 4.90 ERA, striking out 73 in 68 innings of work. The lefthander's eight wins is tied for sixth in single-season school history, and his 9.7 strikeouts per nine clip in 2013 stands second all-time.
He helped the Camels set a school and Big South record with a 2.63 team ERA this season, and ranks among Campbell's all-time leaders in appearances (60, tied 10th), relief appearances (48, 11th), strikeouts (167, ninth) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.61, third).
He notched six quality starts on the season, including a one-hit, 13 strikeout gem in seven innings of work on April 23 in a win over North Carolina Central. Marksberry also fanned nine in 5 1/3 in a win over Longwood in the 2013 Big South Tournament.
Marksberry is the third Camel to be taken in the MLB Draft under head coach Greg Goff following Ryan Hamme (31st round, Chicago White Sox, 2009) and Jake Smith (48th round, San Francisco Giants, 2011), and the 46th overall in program history.
He is the highest CU pick since the Milwaukee Brewers took Nic Carter in the fourth round in 2002.
