BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Casey Walker scored a career-high 30 points and Delaware State defeated Campbell 70-60 Saturday night at Gore Arena.
Walker made 7-of-16 shots, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range, and 12-of-15 from the stripe for the Hornets (4-10), who closed the game on a 15-7 run. Kendal Williams added 12 points, while Kendall Gray contributed 11 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks for Delaware State, which won its second-straight game.
D.J. Mason came off the bench to lead Campbell (6-9) with 18 points on 7-of-11 from the floor, and grabbed 7 boards. Reco McCarter added 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists, but hit just 4-of-12 from the field. Marvelle Harris finished in double figures for the second-straight night with 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting, plus 6 rebounds.
Campbell's top two scorers – Darius Leonard (12.1) and Andrew Ryan (10.7) - finished with just 4 points. The Camels entered the game ranked 29th in the nation in 3-point field goals made per game (8.4) but hit a season-low 2-of-21 (.095), including 0-of-10 in the second half.
"We got clean looks just about every possession and we just needed to make some shots and it would've been a different game," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan. "We didn't make a couple of critical plays when we needed to. We gave up three or four offensive rebounds that were back-breakers. In order to win a game like this, you've got to make those plays."
Campbell led 40-36 after Leonard scored in the paint with 14:18 to play, but Delaware State answered with a 17-4 run and led 53-44 after Walker hit a 3 from the top of the key with 8:03 remaining. The Camels rallied and cut the gap to 55-53 with 5:39 to go, but never drew closer.
"(Delaware State) is good," said McGeehan of the Hornets who have lost to Georgia Tech, Clemson, George Washington Dayton and Oklahoma State on the road and have faced the 39th-most difficult schedule in the nation. "Their record doesn't indicate it because they've played everybody in the country."
The Hornets shot 47.8 percent (22-46) from the field and made 4-of-13 threes (.308), but hit four more foul shots (22-of-32) than Campbell (14-of-18) attempted. The victory was Delaware State's first (1-6) on the road this year, while CU dropped to 4-4 at home.
Campbell connected on 22-of-55 from the floor (.400).
Delaware State led 17-11 with 10:09 to play in the opening half after Tyshawn Bell scored underneath. However, the Camels answered with a 14-4 run and went in front 25-21 when McCarter hit both ends of a 1-and-1 with 2:35 to play.
Mason connected on a 3 from the left of the key as time ran down to give the Camels a 32-30 advantage at the break. The sophomore from Clarkton, N.C., scored 11 first-half points on 4-of-7 shooting in 14 minutes.
Campbell shot 41.7 percent (10-24) from the floor in the opening half and made only 2-of-11 threes, but committed only two turnovers and made 10-of-12 from the line. Delaware State hit 11-of-23 (.478) from the floor in the opening period. Walker led the Hornets with 14 points before intermission on 4-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the line.
The Camels open conference play at home Wednesday in a 7 p.m. start against High Point.
