WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite a career-high 30 points from sophomore Amanda Coffer, Campbell fell to UNC Wilmington, 89-80, Wednesday night in the Lady Camels' first loss of the season.
Coffer led CU (2-1) on 11-for-17 shooting, netting 3-of-7 threes and 5-of-6 free throws.
Senior Juli Osborne collected a team-high nine rebounds, adding 11 points, while classmate Kiera Gaines recorded 12 points and eight boards.
The Lady Camels were 32-for-39 (82.1 pct.) from the free throw line, the most made free throws since Dec. 11, 2013 against UNC Asheville. Campbell was 22-of-45 (48.9 pct.) from the floor on 4-for-11 (36.4 pct.) from three.
For UNCW (2-0), Kelva Atkins put down 29 points also generating six assists, three steals, and four rebounds. Ryan Flowers posted a game-high 14 rebounds along with 13 points, two steals, a block, and an assist.
As a team, the Seahawks were 33-for-76 (43.4 pct.) from the field and 8-for-18 (44.4 pct.) from beyond the arc. UNCW recorded 15 free throws on 27 attempts (55.6 pct.).
The Lady Camels' first 11 points were netted by Coffer on a three and four layups spanning five minutes, leading Campbell to an 11-10 lead at the first media timeout.
She was perfect from the floor, 7-for-7 FG and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc until her only miss of the half at the 5:56 mark.
The teams were tied 10 times with 13 lead changes in the opening half before UNCW took a 43-41 lead into halftime.
Campbell's final 16 points of the half came from free throws as the Lady Camels went 16-for-18 from the charity stripe. CU didn't score from the floor for the final 9:54 on 0-for-7 shooting.
The Lady Camels held the five-point lead with 1:40 to go before the break, but an 8-1 Seahawk run on two threes from Atkins and a layup from Flowers gave UNCW the two-point advantage at the whistle.
Campbell evened the score at 45 on four Osborne points, but a 7-2 Seahawk jump put UNCW ahead 52-47, and it wouldn't trail again for the rest of the game.
Later in the half, a nine-point run widened the Seahawk lead to 80-66 with 6:09 to go in the half.
The Lady Camels finished the half with nine turnovers to the Seahawks' three.
Campbell has a quick turnaround, hosting Mount St. Mary's Friday in a 7 p.m. game at Gore Arena, its fourth game in eight days.
