BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Damon Sherman-Newsome scored a career-high 29 points and Colgate edged Campbell 54-48 Saturday at Gore Arena.

The Raiders (1-2) closed the game on a 9-2 run as Sherman-Newsome accounted for eight points in the final 1:10.  Austin Tillotson added 10 points and Luke Roh 10 rebounds for Colgate, which led 45-39 before Campbell rallied.

Kyre' Hamer led Campbell (1-2) with 12 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, plus three assists and three steals.  D.J. Mason added 11 points and Curtis Phillips 12 boards for the Camels, who made just 8-of-22 free throws on the day.

"We executed the game plan like we wanted on both ends of the floor, but it came down to free throws and missed front ends of one-and-ones.  You're not going to win a game making 8-of-22 from the line," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan.  "We worked really hard on correcting several things defensively, and on offense we were super aggressive, our starts were clean and played downhill, but we missed our foul shots."

The Camels opened a 25-18 lead when Nehemiah Mabson scored on a short jumper with 5:19 left in the opening half.  However, Campbell went 8:40 without a bucket from the floor and Colgate wrapped an 18-4 run around the break.

Colgate closed the margin to 25-24 at halftime; then took its largest lead (36-29) on Ethan Jacobs' follow dunk with 15:59 to play.  Tillotson's triple was the only Colgate made field goal in a 1-of-13 stretch as the Camels cut the gap and took the lead (46-45) on Mason's two free throws with 1:24 to go.

However, Sherman-Newsome scored an old-fashioned three-point play on the following possession to start the game-ending 9-2 burst.  The senior guard made 10-of-14 from the field, including 3-of-4 threes, and 6-of-7 from the line, while grabbing 7 rebounds in 36 minutes.

On the day, Colgate shot 40.4 percent (19-47) from the field, made 6-of-17 threes (.353) and 10-of-15 (.667) from the stripe and finished with a 36-34 edge on the boards.

Campbell shot 36 percent (18-50) from the field, 30.8 percent (4-13) from 3-point distance and 36.4 percent (8-22) from the line, while committing only seven turnovers.

The Camels travel to 20th-ranked Ohio State Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) in a game that will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
