COLUMBUS, OHIO – Freshman D'Angelo Russell scored 22 points to lead No.-16 Ohio State to a 91-64 win over Campbell Wednesday night at Value City Arena.
Andrew Ryan scored a season-high 17 points for Campbell (1-3), but Ohio State shot 61 percent (34-56) from the field to remain unbeaten on the year (4-0).
Russell made 9-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-6 threes, and dealt seven assists with no turnovers in 30 minutes to lead five Buckeyes in double figures. Marc Loving added 18 points, while Sam Thompson and Shannon Scott had 11 each. Amir Williams contributed 10 for OSU, which held a 25-7 edge in points off turnovers.
Ryan made 5-of-8 threes for the Camels, who fell to 0-12 all-time against nationally-ranked teams. D.J. Mason chipped in 10 points and a game-high six rebounds. Kyre' Hamer had nine points for CU, which shot 38 percent from the field.
Ohio State led 45-22 at the break when Russell nailed a corner three at the buzzer. The Buckeyes shot 60 percent (15-25) from the floor in the opening period.
After Luke Moyer's 27-foot triple brought the Camels within 9-8 with 15:51 to play, the Buckeyes answered with a 17-2 run sparked by 7 points from Loving to open up a double-digit lead.
CU opened the second half on a 10-3 burst and out-scored the Buckeyes 22-20 over the first 9:07 of the second period after Ryan hit his fifth triple of the night to trim the margin to 65-44.
However, the Camels could not cut the gap further. Russell hit a step-back three; then stole the ball and canned another from long range to push the gap to 81-54 with 6:08 to play.
"We talked at halftime about trying to be more aggressive in the second half and a little more confident, and we were," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan. "Andrew really did a nice job of finding open spots and being shot-ready."
The Camels made a season-high 10 three-pointers (in 26 attempts) and shot 77.8 percent (14-18) from the free throw line. Ohio State connected on 8-of-20 from beyond the arc (.400) and 15-of-19 (.789) from the stripe and finished with a 31-26 edge on the glass.
Despite giving away size at every position, Campbell batted for 13 offensive rebounds and held a 20-8 margin in second-chance points.
Campbell continues a stretch of three-consecutive road games and five of its next six away from home Sunday in a 3:30 p.m. tip-off at Sacred Heart (Fairfield, Conn.). Those five road contests will be played in five different states (Ohio, Connecticut, Virginia, Delaware and South Carolina).
