Camels down Coker in exhibition game

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – D.J. Mason scored 23 points to lead four players in double figures and Campbell defeated Coker 73-65 in a men's basketball exhibition game Saturday at Gore Arena.

Andrew Ryan added 17 points and eight rebounds, hitting 10-of-10 from the line in the second half. Rod Days scored 11 and Kyre' Hamer 10 for the Camels, who rode an 18-2 run early in the final period to take the lead for good.

Larry Felder led the Division II Cobras with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Errick Bethel chipped in 15, 13 in the final half.

Felder's driving bucket gave Coker a 39-27 lead with 17:09 to play. However Coker went 1-of-4 from the floor with five turnovers during the decisive Campbell burst.

After trailing 32-23 at the break, Campbell made nine of its first 12 shots of the final period and never trailed again after Hamer's bucket with 12:26 to play gave the hosts their first lead (43-41) since the 16:22 mark of the opening half.

Mason made 9-of-12 from the floor on the night (3-of-3 threes), grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots. Ryan had three assists and no turnovers, while Days and Hamer each finished 4-of-6 from the field. Hamer grabbed seven rebounds, while Quinton Ray came off the bench to deal a team-high four assists.

Campbell shot 62.5 percent (15-25) in the second half, 50 percent (23-46) for the game. Coker finished the night shooting 36.5 percent (23-63) from the floor, but stayed close thanks to a 25-12 edge in second-chance points.

"I think we played with more energy and focus in the second half," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan. "We solidified defensively and that helped us get control of the game."

Campbell opens its regular season at home next Friday (Nov. 14) in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against Barber-Scotia. After a Dec. 18 contest at Davidson, CU hosts Colgate on Nov. 22 in its first contest of the Buckeye Classic.
