DOVER, Del. - Campbell used a 24-2 run over eight minutes in the first half to take control of the game, and 12 second-half points from junior D.J. Mason gave the Camels a 70-55 victory at Delaware State on Wednesday for their first road win of the season.
The Camels improved to 3-5 on the season and won their second straight game, while the Hornets fell to 4-5.
Campbell enjoyed its best three-point shooting night of the season, knocking down nine of its 17 attempts (52.9 percent) from beyond the arc. In total from the field, the Camels went 24-of-49 (49 percent) in the victory.
On the defensive side, the Camels held Delaware State to just 2-of-18 shooting (11.1 percent) from three-point range, a season-low mark among Campbell opponents. The Hornets shot 41.9 percent (18-of-43) from the field in total.
Mason led all Camels with 15 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Sophomore Kyre' Hamer added 12 points and freshman Curtis Phillips had nine of his own. Redshirt senior Reco McCarter finished with eight points and eight rebounds, just missing his first double-double of the season.
For Delaware State, Amere May led all scorers with 28 points, but no other Hornet reached double figures on the night.
Keyed by four three-pointers over a five-possession span, the Camels seized control of the game with a 24-2 run over eight minutes. Hamer knocked down the first, and Luke Moyer, Phillips and Nehemiah Mabson hit three consecutive shots from outside as part of the run that left Campbell with a 35-13 advantage with 3:32 left in the first half.
Delaware State answered with a 9-0 run to close the first frame, spurred by seven points from May, and Campbell carried a 35-22 lead into the halftime break.
Five quick points by the Hornets to open the second half cut Campbell's lead to single digits (35-27), but a turnover and a quick layup by Mason put the Camels back in front by 10. They did not relinquish the double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Campbell's lead grew to as many as 26 late in the second half on the strength of a 17-7 run, culminating in a layup from McCarter at 5:47 that gave Campbell a 68-42 edge.
