CHARLESTON, S.C. – Campbell earned its first road win of the season, 69-65, over Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon, as senior Kiera Gaines registered her second double-double in as many conference games of the season.
The Lady Camels move to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the Big South, while the Bucs fall to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Gaines finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds with two assists and five steals. She shot 5-for-11 from the field, 1-for-2 from three, and 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Sophomore Amanda Coffer and redshirt junior RaeChaun Edwards each tallied 12 points with Coffer adding five rebounds, two steals and a block. Edwards tacked on eight steals, six assists, one block, and five rebounds.
For Charleston Southern, Tatum Jarvis totaled a game-high 21 points on 8-for-17 shooting, going 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and 1-for-2 from the free throw line.
Campbell held the lead for most of the second half, not allowing the Bucs to inch closer than three until the 6:40 mark as Dobson hit a three to cut the CU lead to 50-48.
The teams traded seven points apiece before Alecia Hardy converted a three-point play with 4:07 to go, evening the score at 57.
Monique Maximilien gave CSU their only lead of the second half, 59-57, on a jumper with 3:17 remaining.
The Camels proved resilient, answering with layups from Gaines and Edwards and two free throws from freshman Krystal Mangum to go up 63-59 with a minute and a half to go.
A Hardy three was then followed by three CU free throws and the Camels held the 66-62 advantage with just 20 seconds to go.
A quick three from Jarvis put the Bucs within one, 66-65, with 12 seconds to go, but the Lady Camels ended the game on a free throw from Edwards and two from Gaines, taking the 69-65 victory away from the Buc Dome.
The Bucs led by as many as seven in the opening frame, 17-10, after a seven-point spring with 10:32 to go before the break.
However, Campbell recorded a 10-2 run, with five Lady Camels scoring, to go up 20-19 with 6:10 remaining in the half. CSU took its final lead of the half at the 6:02 mark on a Jarvis three, taking the 22-20 advantage.
Freshman MaKala Rouse evened the score at 22 after a jumper with 5:47 remaining, drawing the foul and sinking the free throw to put CU up by one and kicking off an 8-0 run for the Lady Camels. Gaines put down two free throws, while senior Summer Leverette added one, and Edwards converted a layup to put the Lady Camels ahead 27-22 with 4:30 to go before half,
The CU defense held the Bucs without a point for 5:19 before Shauntavia Dobson posted a jumper with 41 seconds remaining.
The teams traded jumpers, CU's from Coffer and Dobson hitting another for the Bucs, and the Lady Camels took the 30-26 advantage into the locker room.
The Lady Camels have a quick turnaround with a 7 p.m. game Monday in Gore Arena taking on Brevard.
