CHARLESTON, S.C. – A late 10-0 run lifted the College of Charleston to a 58-47 win over Campbell Sunday afternoon at TD Arena.
After D.J. Mason's 3-point play with 4:01 remaining brought the Camels within 43-40, Charleston started the decisive burst with second-chance points on its next two possessions.
Glen Pierre, Jr., scored an old-fashioned 3-point play to push the gap to 46-40 with 3:39 to go. Mason and Ryan both misfired on 3-point attempts in the ensuing Camel trip. Joe Chealey grabbed the rebound of his own miss the next time down the floor and found Canyon Barry open in the left corner for a triple.
Two Camel misses and four Charleston free throws gave the Cougars their largest lead (53-40) with 1:07 to play in a game where the margin separating the teams was only two possessions for 37 minutes.
Mason came off the bench to lead Campbell (3-6) with 18 points, while Kyre' Hamer added 16 for the Camels, who shot just 32 percent from the floor and made 4-of-22 three-pointers.
Chealey led CofC (5-4) with 18 points (6-of-6 from the line), Berry scored 14 and Anthony Stitt 12 for the Cougars, who won their third-straight game thanks to a 14-8 edge in second-chance points and by converting 12-of-16 from the line. Pierre, Jr., pulled down a game-high 9 rebounds.
"I thought we were really good on defense and anytime you do that, you're going to have a chance to win," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan. "Really, those offensive rebounds down the stretch were the difference. Most of those led to baskets or fouls. We had a hand on the ball, but just didn't grab it."
Hamer scored 13 of his points in the opening half, while Mason had 13 in the final stanza for Campbell, which missed its first 10 threes of the second period. Hamer finished the day 6-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from 3-point range, grabbed 6 rebounds and had 4 steals. Mason was 7-of-17 from the field and gathered in six boards.
Red-shirt seniors Reco McCarter (11.5) and Andrew Ryan (10.5) both entered the game scoring in double figures for the Camels, but combined for only four points Sunday on a combined 1-of-16 from the field. Ryan, who entered the game shooting 46 percent beyond the arc, hauled down a team-leading 7 rebounds.
"Give a lot of credit to College of Charleston; they are a very good defensive team," said McGeehan. "We ran our offense well and got some open looks, but just didn't make them. Usually when Drew (Ryan) gets five threes, he's going to make at least two of them. But he played 34 minutes with no turnovers against a pressing team. He played well, but just couldn't get the shots to fall."
Despite shooting just 36 percent in the opening half, Campbell trailed by only 26-23 at the break thanks to Hamer's three-pointer at the buzzer. The sophomore guard scored 13 of Campbell's 23 first-half points on 5-of-7 shooting, while making both of his 3-point attempts. The rest of the Camels went 4-of-18 (.222) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
CofC shot 46 percent (11-24) from the floor, 2-5 from the line, in the first period. Chealey had 9 first-half points to lead the Cougars.
The Camels begin a 3-game home stand Wednesday in a 7 p.m. start against Ohio Valley Conference member SIU-Edwardsville.
