BUIES CREEK, N.C. – A career-high 18 points for senior Summer Leverette paced Campbell to a 72-51 victory over Brevard Monday night at Gore Arena.
Leverette shot 8-of-10 from the floor, going 1-for-2 from beyond the arc and sinking her only free throw attempt.
Senior Kiera Gaines and junior Jessica Pone were the other two Lady Camels in double digits, scoring 13 and 11, respectively. Gaines added nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks and steals; Pone grabbed four rebounds and notched an assist.
Redshirt junior RaeChaun Edwards dished out eight assists while committing just two turnovers, and tallied eight points, five rebounds, and a steal.
For Brevard, Chelsea Turner led with 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting, going 3-for-6 from three.
Campbell was 27-of-61 (44.3 pct.) from the field, shooting 5-for-13 from three and 13-for-16 from the free throw line. Brevard shot 17-for-61 FG (27.9 pct.), going 8-for-25 from three and 9-for-13 from the charity stripe.
Campbell jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on two Juli Osborne free throws and a fast break layup from Leverette in the opening 76 seconds, and the Lady Camels never gave up the lead.
The Lady Camels extended their lead to 14-5 using a 10-3 stretch ending with an Amanda Coffer three with 14:44 remaining in the half.
Later in the half, Brevard used a 10-3 run of its own to pull within two of CU, 18-16, at the 6:27 mark. The Tornados posted two threes in a 31-second span in the sprint and held Campbell without a point for nearly four minutes.
After a CU timeout, Leverette put down a layup, drawing a foul and converting the three-point play to distance the Lady Camels from the Tornados, 21-16.
Katie Williams scored two free throws before the CU defense stalled Brevard's scoring for over two minutes, notching a D Janelle Brown three and a Gaines jumper to put the Lady Camels up 26-18 with just under three minutes before the break.
The teams traded five points apiece in the following two minutes, and the first half closed on a Leverette jumper and a three from Turner as Campbell took a 33-26 advantage into the locker room.
Campbell outscored Brevard 39-25 in the second half to remain perfect in Gore Arena this season.
An 11-0 run in the second half, with four points each from Edwards and Leverette, pushed Campbell's lead to 66-52 with 10:34 to go. Pone added a pair of free throws and Gaines added one of her own to complete the run.
Another sprint, 12-2, extended the Lady Camels' lead to 66-44, the largest of the game, led by seven points from Pone.
The Lady Camels ended the contest on four straight points from sophomore Courtney Best, and took the 72-51 victory in its first game at home since Nov. 21.
Campbell will be at home for the final time in 2014 on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. tilt against Elon inside Gore Arena.
